REPORT OF TREE WARDEN.
NORWOOD, MASS., FEB. 1, 1908.
TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :
GENTLEMEN :- As Tree Warden of the Town of Norwood, I herewith submit my annual report.
During the month of July, 1907, several hundred trees were wrapped with burlap, for the purpose of trapping the gypsy moth caterpillar. These trees were in the localities where colonies had been found the season before. The trees were carefully inspected daily for a time, and three thousand, four hundred and six (3,406) lavas were found and destroyed.
After the trees had shed their leaves a thorough canvas was made from the Walpole line to the Westwood line, near High Bridge, and from Nahatan street to the Canton line, and two hundred and thirty-one (231) gypsy moth egg clusters were found and painted with creosote. These nests were scattered along through town, one or two nests in a locality with few exceptions. The largest colony was found in a pile of old bean poles in the garden at 338 Railroad avenue.
The finding of these egg clusters in all sections of the town show to us the necessity of carefully watching for the caterpillars the coming spring.
1 have found but two brown-tail moth nests this season.
The San Jose scale is alarmingly prevalent in town, but as this is generally found on fruit trees and very rarely on shade trees it must be attended to by individual owners.
Very little trimming has been done during the year as the sum appropriated was needed for exterminating the moth pests.
100
The sum of $800 could be used to great advantage the coming year for caring for the trees, for material and labor to be used for guarding against the moth pests.
I recommend that this sum be appropriated for this purpose. Respectfully submitted, H. FRANK WINSLOW,
Tree Warden.

REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF ANIMALS.
TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :
I herewith submit to you the following report of my work as Inspector of Animals for the past year.
At the beginning of the year there was a great deal of un- easiness among dog owners and others on account of the alarm- ing prevalence of rabies all about us.
A great many cases were called to my attention where rabies were suspected to exist but upon examination, and in some cases observation for some considerable time, these animals were found to be free from rabies.
During the spring and summer on a great many different occasions I was called upon to examine cows that were supposed to be suspicious of having tuberculosis.
In none of these instances did I consider tuberculosis to exist after a careful physical examination.
In the summer notices were received and posted in various parts of the town, again warning horse owners and others of the alarming prevalence of glanders and farcy in neighboring towns.
Again this year we have been particularly fortunate as regards glanders, for while I have been called upon to investi- gate some few cases that seemed suspicious there has really been, so far as I know, not a single case within our town limits.
The first of October orders were received from the Cattle Bureau ordering a complete inspection of all the neat cattle, sheep and swine within the town limits.
At the time of this inspection there were 73 premises visited on which were found 363 cattle and 120 pigs.
IO2
Most of these animals were found to be in very good physi- cal condition and housed under reasonably sanitary conditions.
Later in the year a dog made his appearance acting sus- piciously. This dog was placed in quarantine where he died later, presumably with rabies, but as he had bitten no person or no other animal, no effort was made to determine definitely whether he was suffering from rabies or not.
Yours respectfully,
JAMES J. MULVEHILL, M. D. V., Inspector of Animals.

THE VISITING NURSING WORK.
The work of the Visiting Nursing Committee has been charitable, philanthropic and educational. The money for its support has been contributed by individuals and organizations of our town. The benefits have been shared by rich and poor, by sick and well, by the resident and the stranger; all have been beneficents indirectly. In the ultimate view, conditions in families and houses have been discovered which require the cooperation of the police, the Overseers of the Poor, the legality of proper housing, and the inspection of immigrants.
Considering merely the $641.60 that this community has contributed this organized work has proved a cheap investment with a substantial return. Some money has been saved the treasury of the town. Some debts have been saved over- burdened families. Directions have been given to those attend- ing the sick. Cheer and comfort have been carried to the shut- ins. Attention and some care have been given to the shut-outs. A pneumatic mattress, an open shack, flowers, fruits, old linen, are among the supplies that have been arranged by the thought- fulness of friends. The continuance of these gifts, and of sub- scriptions, the immediate need of a sanitary room suggests a room and its equipment ; all these give the outlook for the work in the future.
The following is the statement of the Visiting Nurse Com- mittee for the year ending 8 January 1908 :
