FROM THE RECORDS OF THE LATE SAMUEL SMITH IN THE REUBEN HOAR LIBRARY

NOTE .- Mr. Smith spent a large part of his life in genealogical research, and left voluminous records by no means confined to Littleton people. He seldom stated his authority.

In copying and compiling extracts from them, it has been the intention to give records relating to Littleton people which differ from, or are not found in the preceding pages.

Frequently, however, matter previously given has been included for the purpose of showing relationships, which the town and church records often fail to make clear.

Where it is uncertain whether the persons were of Littleton, the records have usually been copied, also the main line of descent of old families before they came to Littleton.

The reader is therefore cautioned not to infer, because a person is recorded with no residence mentioned in the following pages, that he lived in Littleton . Other evidence is needed to establish that fact.
