WHITCOMB

(The small figure at the right of a name indicates the generation, beginning with John Whitcomb.)

John Whitcomb1 is supposed to have come from Dorchester, in Dorset, England, from the circumstance that it was a common name in that vicinity, and that he came with the early settlers of Dorchester, New England, who were most of them from Dorsetshire. He was in Dorchester as early as 1633 and a member of the church 1638. In 1640 he appears in Scituate. In 1654 he removed to Lancaster, where he died Sept. 24, 1662. Frances his wife d. 3m 17 1671 (Lancaster record).

There is no record of the birth of his children; most of them must have been born in England. From incidental records (including probate record at Cambridge) we find that they were:

Jonathan2 m. Nov. 25 1667 Hannah (Roper, Bosworth, Morton, Sumner, Blood or Tarbell?) He d. 1690, she d. 1697.

John2 probably m. May 19 1669 Mary. (One John Whitcomb m.

16-1-167{ Mary.) He d. Apr 6 1683 (or Nov. 22 1683-a Lancaster record).

Josiah2 m. 4-11-1664 Rebecca, dau. Lawrence and Hannah Waters or sister of Lawrence Waters. Josiah2 d. Apr 12, 1718 at Lancaster. His will was probated 22 Apr.

Job2 m. Mary. They removed to Wethersfield, Conn. He d. 1683.

Katherine2 m. Nov 25 1644 Rhodolphus Ellmes (or Ellines) of Scituate and has a numerous posterity.

Abigail2.

Mary2 probably m. Aug. 23 1683 John Moore (probably 3d), s. John and Anna (Smith) Moore of Lancaster.

Robert2 m. March 9 1660 Mary, dau. James Cudworth, and resided in Scituate.

James2 m. Rebecca. He went to Boston and is supposed to have owned the land on which the Tremont House now (1875) stands.

He probably, after residing in Cambridge a few years, went to Lancaster.

Jonathan,2 Job,2 Josiah,2 Mary,2 Abigail2 and John2 removed to Lancaster with their father and have posterity in that vicinity.

WHITCOMB

Children of Jonathan2 and Hannah Whitcomb (their names are learned from his inventory taken Feb. 25 1690-1 and returned by Hannah, his widow, on Apr. 7 1691. Some are recorded in Lancaster.) :

Hannah3 b. Sept 28 1668, d. Dec 19. 1668.

Jonathan3 b. Feb. 26 1669, probably m. about 1685 or 1690. There are some indications that he had three wives. He may have m. 1st Hannah, 2ª Mary. Did he m. Mary Joslyn b. 14-10-1666, dau. Abraham and Beatrice? See witnesses to will of Mrs. Frances Whitcomb, viz .: John Roper, R Houghton & Roger Sumner. In 1700 Jonathan3 was residing in what was then supposed to be Lancaster, perhaps now Littleton or Harvard or Groton. He owned real estate in what is now Lancaster, Groton, Littleton and other towns. He resided in Groton 1708-1714. Oct. 3ª 1710 he conveyed his house and lot in Groton to Samuel Barron and on the same day took a deed of Joseph Blood of land at or near Black Pond in Nashoba, on which he is supposed to have resided during the remainder of his life. Did he m. 2ª Mary Blood? Feb. 6 1699-1700 his wife Mary (now so supposed) released him of all debts, etc. The witnesses to this release were Benja Bellows and John Keyes. Did Jonathan Whitcomb3 m. a Bellows, Keyes or Wilder about 1690, or a Longley, Holden or Sawtell? His last wife was probably Deborah Scripture, for Jonathan Whitcomb and Deborah Scripture, dau. Samuel, both of Groton, were m. at Concord September 4 1710. From record of his son Jonathan,4 his administrator, we learn that he died April 10 1715. His wife may have died about 1712, as he paid Samuel Barron for a coffin about that time. We learn from receipt of Hannah Powers to the administrator that there were nine children. An inventory of the real estate of Jonathan Whitcomb3 was taken May 12 1715 by Tho8 Tarbell, Josiah Whetcomb and Eleazer Lawrence, all uncles.
