Report of the Park Commissioners for 1913

To the citizens of Attleborough:

The park commissioners herewith submit their report for the year ending December 31, 1913.

The greater part of the appropriation for the year was expended for work which the commis- sioners believe will be permanent. Considerable grading was done in front of and around the Newell shelter building. A large amount of soil was neces- sarily removed from the driveway leading to the shelter and replaced with a bed of stone for drain- age purposes.

Granolithic work, which bears a ten year guarantee was installed by a reputable concern in various parts of the park. The building formerly used as the merry-go-round was converted to a home for the menagerie which proved most popular, drawing large crowds. During the coming year we would like to improve the lake by enlarging it, thus furnishing a larger surface for skating and a wading pool which is much needed and which we believe would be highly appreciated by the children of the town. The lake has been especially popular with skaters. With the banks graded and paved with cobble stones set in Portland cement and the supply of town water, which the water commissioners have

124

ANNUAL REPORT

agreed to furnish as soon as the pipes are laid, even better skating facilities can be supplied.

A large space in the upper part of the park was ploughed up and levelled for a ball ground. Much blasting being necessary this took consider- able money, but the commissioners expect to be able to enlarge and improve these grounds during the coming year so that an excellent ball field will be available. Most of the work has been done on the County street side of the park with scarcely any- thing done to improve the Dennis street section. The driveways must be repaired. The buildings need painting, and the gutters on the Casino must be replaced.

The main entrance to the park must be raised and repaired. This requires money and we hope that the people of Attleboro will see fit to make this investment. We recommend and request an appro- priation of $1.500 in addition to the $2,000 stipula- ted in the deed of the park to the Town.

Many more persons have visited the park dur- ing the past season than ever before, large crowds being especially noticeable Sundays and in the af- ternoons and evenings. The superintendent has given the cultivation of the flowers his personal at- tention and your commissioners believe the park to have been more beautiful and more appreciated by the townspeople during the past year than ever be- fore.

(Signed) SOLON D. BUSHEE. CARLTON H. NERNEY, CHARLES A. MOOERS,

Park Commissioners of the Town of Attleborough.
