Report of the Superintendent of Streets
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen of the Town of Attleboro:
Gentlemen: I herewith submit my tenth annual re- port as Superintendent of Streets for the year end- ing December 31, 1913.
I am pleased to report that the streets were in a much better condition at the close of the past year than they were at the beginning of the year how- ever, there is a large amount of work to be perform- ed before we can truthfully say that the streets are in as good condition as they were previous to the time of the installment of the system of sewers; I also wish to say that in view of the facts that the cost of labor has in our department increased 43% during the past ten years and the increase in auto- mobile traffic has lessened the life of our streets at least 50% that in order to maintain our standard of good streets we feel that we must have a larger ap- propriation also the fact that we are continually ac- cepting new streets adds to the cost of maintaining the department.
The following is a summary of the work per- formed during the past year:
All of the streets in the outlying sections have been thoroughly scraped and gutters cleaned, the brush has been cut from these streets by means of a mowing machine which lessened the cost of the work considerably.
