OS

This is a new article, and is superior to any other now in the market. The process by which the Bands are stretched is entirely new, and competent judges pronounce it a decided improvement upon any other mode, as it brings the leather to its utmost tension without marring its texture, or lessening its strength-a grand result never before satisfactorily obtained.

Factory Agents, and others who are about purchasing Beltings, cannot do better than to call and see the article above described.

Having made arrangements with Southern Tanners to receive directly from them the Trimmed Oaked Tann- ed Leather, the first successful effort of the kind in the New England States, we shall endeavor to keep it con- stantly on hand to supply the trade.

We are thus enabled, not only to sell the raw material, of the best quality, at reduced prices, but also to manufacture it into Belting, of a most substantial character, upon a principle far superseding any other, and on terms equally satisfactory to any that have been offered to the public.

THE

COCHITUATE COCK. 9

also recently invented by the Subscribers, on the Self-adjusting principle, is fast increasing in popular favor. It is a complete article for drawing Soda, Mead, &c. from Fountains ; it is also excellent for water tubes, aqueducts, &c., and for drawing off all kinds of liquids. Its construction is very simple, it seldom gets out of order, and never refuses to perform its duty when required. In short, it is a capital improvement on any other article of the kind.

Orders will receive immediate attention when addressed to

BOSTON, JULY 1, 1844.

This may certify that Dr. H. G. Luther, of this city, was under my instruction, in acquiring a knowledge of Dental Surgery, and having, during that time and since, witnessed operations performed by him, I have no hesitation in rec- ommending him to the confidence and patronage of all who may need the services of a good Dentist, as a gentleman every way qualified to perform all operations coming under the province of a skillful practitioner.

A. A. PHILLIPS, Surgeon Dentist.

BOSTON, Jan. 1, 1846.

This may certify, that having employed Dr. Luther, Dent- ist, of this city, in his professional capacity, and also wit- nessed operations performed by him for my friends and others, I feel justified in recommending him to all who may need the services of a skillful operator, as a gentleman every way qualified to fulfill all duties appertaining to his profes- sion.

BOSTON, Nov. 1, 1847.

Having myself employed H. G. Luther, Dentist, in his professional capacity, and witnessed his operations upon the teeth of several of my friends, I most cheerfully com- mend him to the patronage of all who may wish the services of a good Dentist, believing him to be a faithful workman and a careful operator. DAVID THAYER, M.D.

BOSTON, June 17, 1847.

A number of specimens of surgical and mechanical dent- istry performed by Dr. Luther, having come uuder our no- tice, during two years past, which have given the most perfect satisfaction to the persons for whom they were per- formed, and having ourselves employed him with satisfac- tory results, we commend him to our friends as one worthy of patronage. SOUTHWICK & WINSLOW. Apothecaries, Tremoot St.

BOSTON, May 12, 1848.

SIR-It affords me much pleasure, after visiting the most remote parts of the globe, to bear testimony to your perfect knowledge of dental surgery. I have seen many of your patients who have been much benefited by you. The fa- cility by which you extract and stuff teeth, without causing that excruciating pain incidental to such operations, bas pleased me much ; more particularly as I have seen it evinced in some members of my own family. The nicety by which you adjust the fitting of artificial teeth, cannot be surpassed by any dentist in the city.

No. 4 BRATTLE,

ABOVE IS A FAC-SIMILE OF A

SILVER MEDAL

Which was awarded to us at the last exhibition of the Mechanics' Association, it being THE ONLY ONE EVER RECEIVED FOR

BOYS' GLO

IN THIS CITY,

And so far as we know, the second in this Country, one having been previously awarded by the American Institute in New York.

The business in which we are engaged is one of immense labor and perplexity, and requiring no small share of mechanical skill. It is well known that our senior partner was the first in this city to

MAKE AN EXCLUSIVE BUSINESS OF BOYS' CLOTHING,

or even to regard it as an object worthy the attention of any one possessing ordinary business capacity. We have in our employ cutters of acknowledged taste, and which has been culti- vated by long experience in this difficult branch of the Tailors' art. Our arrangements are such, both at home and abroad, as afford us every facility for carrying on the above business

SUCCESSFULLY AND EXTENSIVELY,

and purchasers will find at our store a larger assortment of well cut and well made Youths' and Children's Clothing than is, or ever before has been, exhibited in any other establishment in this country.

Clothing dealers will promote their own interests by purchasing Boys' Clothing of us, as the garments are well shaped and perfectly assorted. The sizes are indicated by numbers, and a printed tag is attached to each article, so that any one, after becoming familiar with the system, will seldom find it necessary to try a second garment. OUR STOCK is now UN- USUALLY LARGE ! Having taken advantage of the dull season, we have employed an im- mense number of the best hands in the city, and at a time when they would otherwise have been idle ; the work is therefore to be RELIED ON as being of the very best quality. Our Store is a large four-story building, the whole of which is occupied by us for THE DISPLAY OF GOODS; there being no work people on the premises, with the exception of the Cutters. It will therefore appear conclusive that the business must be large. The growth of it has been gradual, although somewhat rapid, a not uncommon result of indefatigable exertion, together with a knowledge of one's business.

MAYNARD & NOYES'

BLACK WRITING INK, For Gold, Steel, or Quill Pens.

This ink has stood the test of more than THIRTY YEARS' trial, and during this time has been con- stantly increasing in public favor and patronage, and is now the leading article in the country. It flows with freedom, becomes permanently black, and will not mould under any circumstances.

Bank of State of N. Carolina, Raleigh, Mar. 4, 1847. Messrs. Maynard & Noyes : Gentlemen, - Your Writing Ink has been in almost constant use by the officers of this banking-house for the last fifteen years, and has always been preferred to any other brand. It flows freely from the pen, and does not mould; and the color, though sometimes pale when first opened, becomes a beautiful permanent black. I have been a regular consumer of it myself during this time, excepting when curiosity has led me to make trial of other kinds, and take pleasure in being able to speak so favorably of it, and trust that my opinion, founded on such long experience, will in- duce many who may not be so well acquainted with its merits, to give it a trial.

Yours, respectfully, C. DEWEY, Cashier.

Messrs. Maynard & Noyes : Gentlemen-We are happy in being able to say that we entirely concur in the opinion expressed above of your Writing Ink by Mr. Dewey, the Cashier of this Institution.

Respectfully yours, DUNN CAMERON, Pres. S. W. WHITING, Teller. D. DU PRE, Bookkeeper.

Post Office, Boston, Ms. Oct. 2, 1843.

The Black Writing Ink manufactured by Messrs. Maynard & Noyes of this city, has been used in this office for several years past. Other inks have dur- ing that time been tested, but theirs has been in every instance preferred. For fluidity, blackness, and permanency, none has been found equal to it.

GEORGE WM. GORDON, Postmaster.

Office of Merchants Ins. Co. Boston, Nov. 18, 1847. Messrs. Maynard & Noyes : Gentlemen-I have used your Writing Ink for the last sixteen years. In 1840, I gave you a certificate of its excellence, and having continued its use ever since, to my en- tire satisfaction, my opinion is confirmed in its su- periority. It flows freely from the pen, and is in all respects the best ink I have ever used.

GEORGE HOMER, Secretary.

Registry of Deeds, Boston, Nov. 20, 1847.

Messrs. Maynard & Noyes: I have made use of your Writing Ink for the recording of deeds, &c. the past twenty-five years, and having found it to suit my wishes and purposes entirely, take pleasure in renewing my testimonial of its superiority. From the appearance of the records in my office, I am satisfied it is superior to any I have used, and con- sider it particularly adapted for all purposes where permanency of color is requisite or desirable. It flows well from the pen, and does not mould ; and my oldest records prove its color to be unalterably black.

HENRY ALLINE, Register of Deeds.

Boston, May 27, 1846.

For twenty years past, I have had occasion to use ink daily, and sometimes for the nicest of penman- ship ; occasionally necessity or curiosity has led me to make use of the article made by different indi- viduals-but I can cheerfully state that I have never found any that combined so many good qualities as that made by Maynard & Noyes.

N. D. GOULD, Teacher Penmanship.

Boston, Feb. 15, 1840.

Messrs. Maynard & Noyes: Gentlemen-It is now, I believe, more than twelve years since the School Committee passed an order for using your Black Writing Ink in the City Schools. I have used it during that period, and deem it a first rate article, and cheerfully recommend it to others. It flows freely from the pen, and increases in black- ness after being committed to paper, and the color is durable. I know of no ink superior to yours, and I have tried many kinds, both English & American. P. MACKINTOSH, JR. Principal of Writing Dep. Hancock School.

We, the subscribers, Writing Masters in the City Schools, cheerfully add our testimony in confirma- tion of the superior quality of Maynard & Noyes' Writing Ink, expressed by Mr. Mackintosh.

A. B. HOYT, N. MERRILL, D. D. CAPEN, J. FAIRBANK, L. CONANT, R. SWAN, JR.

For Sale, wholesale and retail, by the Manufacturers, No. 11 Merchants' Row, Boston, and by Book- sellers, Stationers, and Traders generally throughout the Country.

COPYING INK.

This ink gives a copy as distinct and perfect as the orig- inal, and combines all the properties of our Writing Ink. This quality particularly adapts it for Counting-House use, as it answers all the purposes for which a Writing Liquid is wanted. Put up in quart and pint stone bottles.
