The Peabody Institute was founded June 16, 1851, by a donation of $20,000 presented by GEORGE PEABODY, Esq., of London, a native of South Danvers. By subsequent donations and annuities, his gifts to the Institute are equivalent to about $80,000. About $30,000 of this amount was devoted to the purchasing of a site and the erection of a suitable building for Lectures and a Library, both to be free to the inhabitants of the original town of Danvers.
The Institute Building is a stately edifice, eighty-two feet in length by fifty in breadth, built of brick, and ornamented with brown Con- nectient freestone. Its Lecture Hall is calculated to seat about eight hundred persons. It has, over the rostrum, a full-length por- trait of Mr. Peabody, for which he sat to Mr. Healey, and is con- sidered one of the best productions of that artist. It has also a half-length portrait of Hon Rufus Choate, from the easel of Mr.

Ames. The building was dedicated to its appropriate uses on the 29th of September, 1854, when the dedicatory address was delivered by Mr. Choate. Since that time, annual courses of lectures have been delivered in the hall to large andiences.
The Library Room is situated on the first story, and now cor tains about 8600 volumes. This number does not include the Branch Li- brary at Danvers, which con ains nearly 3000 volumes.
The number of books delivered to borrowers annually is about 20,000, which are nearly all returned to the shelves on the days of the annual exammation of the Library.
The income of the permanent fund, real estate, and annuities is abont $2400 annually, which is applied to the increase and care of the Library, the employment of Lecturers, and the necessary ex- penses of the Institution.

MAYNARD & NOYES'
BLACK WRITING INK.
Testimony of Parties who have Used it for more than a. Quarter of a Century.
REGISTRY OF DEEDS OFFICE, Boston, January 10, 1859.
MESSRS. MAYNARD & NOYES -Gentlemen : I am glad that longer use of your Writing Ink enables me to repeat the testimony given in its favor many years ago. I have used it in this office thirty-seven years, and my oldest records are as legible and black as when first written. This rare quality for permanence renders it invaluable for State and County Records, and all mercantile purposes, where it is important that the writing should remain legible and unchanged in color by the lapse of time.
HENRY ALLINE, Register of Deeds.
The following extract from a letter of a well known and long established Bookseller in Dover, N.HI., is like many others the Pro- prietors are constantly receiving : -
After trying various kinds of Ink, most of my customers come back to yours. I am tired of the miserable compounds offered every little while, pretending to be superior to all other inks, and will have nothing further to do with them. I have used your Ink on my books over 26 years, and my customers can see how it stands against time. Entries made in 1832 are as fresh as those made dur- ing this year. E. J. LANE.
Dover, N. H., Oct. 16, 1858.
Maynard & Noyes' Copying Ink.
This Ink yields a copy as distinct and perfect as the original. It also combines all the properties of our writing ink, for which it can be substituted.
Maynard & Noyes' Carmine Ink.
This article is a beautiful red or crimson color, and surpassingly brilliant and rich. It is free from sediment, and will not mould, fade, or turn dark by exposure to the air.
The above popular Inks, together with Blue, Red, Indelible and Stencil Ink, Chemical Writing Fluid, Ink Powder, &c., are for sale by the Manufacturers,
51 & 53 Water Street, Boston.
And by all HARDWARE DEALERS AND STATIONERS.
