THE DAMON FAMILY.
The Damon family is an old English family dating back to the thirteenth century. Originally of French descent, some authori- ties claiming that the founder of the family went to England with William the Conqueror. A coat-of-arms bearing the motto, "Pro rege, pro lege, pro grege," would indicate that they were a family of standing. The name is variously spelled Damon, Demond, Daming, Damond, Daymon, and many others. There were three families of the early settlers of this name, the Reading, the Way- land, and the Scituate. Deacon John1 founded the Reading; Thomas,1 the Wayland; and John,1 the Scituate family. The family in Ludlow are descendants of Thomas1 of Wayland. His name first appears on the records of Reading in 1681. It is believed that he left the north of England about 1650, and went to Stoneham, not far from the home where his son Thomas2 afterwards lived in South Reading.
Thomas Damon1 was born Jan. 31, 1659, and died Oct. 20, 1723; married May 16, 1683, Lucy Ann Emerson, daughter of Rev. Josiah Emerson. Children: Lucy Ann,2 Joseph,2 Ebenezer,2 Thomas,2 Elizabeth,2 John,2 Hannah,2 Mehit- able,2 Mary,2 Abigail.2
