THE ROOD FAMILY.

The name Rood has been spelled in several ways,-Rhood, Roode, Rude, Rhodes, Roude, and Rood. In an English directory of the year 1830, both Rude and Rood are found.

The story of the first Rood settler is as follows: Mr. Mariner Rood, who was a French sea captain and owned his vessel, was cast ashore in a storm on the Arabian coast and taken prisoner. His crew escaped with the ship and left him to his fate. When out of sight of land, the ship was becalmed. On the following day when all preparations for binding him to the stake had been made, he was led towards the scene. At an unguarded moment he broke away and dived into the water, swimming beneath the surface till safe from his captors, and towards the spot where he thought the ship might be. That night the cabin boy dreamed that his captain was swimming towards them. He told his dream to the mate in charge, who would not believe him. The boy returned to his berth and dreamed that his captain was near. He then asked the mate for a glass, through which he saw an object moving in the water. A boat was lowered and the captain res- cued. The vessel finally landed at Stonington, Conn., where it was sold and its owner settled. Another tradition claims that Rhode Island was first called Rood Island, perhaps from the fact that this ship landed first at some point on Rhode Island. It is a fact that this island bore the name Rood Island as late as 1639, according to John Hall's Diary. After that it was called Rhoad and finally Rhode Island.

Ten years later, in 1649, Thomas Rood,1 the first Rood whose record is traceable, settled in Norwich, Conn., with his wife Sarah and nine children. He died in March, 1668, and his wife in 1672. Their children, Sarah,2 Thomas,2 Micah,2 John,2 Samuel.2 and George,2 are named in the list of inhabitants of the town of Nor- wich and Preston.

Micah Rood,2 son of Thomas,1 obtained some notoriety on account of a peculiar variety of apple which grew upon the farm
