TOWN OF MERRIMAC

REPORT OF CEMETERY TRUSTEES

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and citizens of Merrimac :

The Board of Cemetery Trustees, during this past year, have purchased new mowers and leaf blowers for the cemetery work, which have helped tremendously in keeping the cemetery in good condition.

The money appropriated for repairs to the road was found to be inadequate to do a complete job, so was held · over to be done this year with an additional appropriation to cover additional cost. We hope to have the new road in as soon as the ground is dry.

The southwest part of the cemetery has been cleaned of trees, the wood has been cut up and the brush burned, and we hope to have fill in to finish that area for future use.

We want to thank John Kirkpatrick for his fine work in the cemetery and learn with regret that he may be leaving us in the Spring. Mr. Kirkpatrick has done a fine job in keeping the cemeteries in good condition.

We also want to thank the Selectmen, the Town Auditor, the Highway Department, the Light and Water Departments, the Police Department, the Town Clerk, the Finance Board and the Town Treasurer for their co- operation with our department throughout the year.

We also want to thank, Delmar Parant, Veterans Officer, for his co-operation and assistance in getting new maps of the cemetery. He was most helpful and we now have a new map of the entire cemetery.

Respectfully submitted,

A. RAY CLARK, Chairman MERRILL B. SMITH, Clerk HAROLD M. WATERHOUSE

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

The following report of your Civil Defense Agency is. hereby submitted for the year 1962.

This year the Operational Plan for the Town of Merrimac was completed with the exception of the appendix of the local departments and has been approved. by the State of Massachusetts.

This year I requested money to purchase communica -- tion equipment for a Control Center but you people turned down the request. This Control Center will be the only means of getting help during an emergency. How will you get food, clothing, equipment and medical supplies. from the State and National supply depots without this. Control Center?

During the Cuban crisis you people called me up and asked me if Civil Defense was ready to function if needed. Now I ask you! How can your Civil Defense be ready if you, the people, do not appropriate the necessary funds to put Civil Defense in operational readiness.

As of December 31, 1962 I will no longer be your Director of Civil Defense. I hope that you will give my successor more support then I have received in the past.

Respectfully submitted, MAURICE CAREY

Director of Civil Defense

ANNUAL REPORT

A great many cases were suppressed without arrests, many complaints were withdrawn, by request of the com- plainent and the consent of the defendant, in the interest of family harmony. Restitution was made in some cases, involving property damage, by Juveniles, and they were left in promised, stricter supervision by their parents.

Due to the fact that many more people realize that Crime is a part of their individual concern, and have. re- vealed to the police things they have heard and seen, concerning a violation of the law, it has been possible to bring local crimes to justice. This no doubt has been the most burdensome year in the history of your local police department, still with your cooperation, and with our confidence extended to you, we can boast of a nearly clean slate. "WITH CRIME EVER INCREASING"

I desire to thank the Honorable Board of Selectmen, His Honor Judge Martin F. Connelly, Acting Judge F. Leslie Viccaro, The Clerk of Court, the Probation Officer, the Amesbury Police Department, the Superintendents of the Light and Water, Street and School Departments, Officers of the Department and Auxilliary Police, and the citizens of the Town for their cooperation during the year.

Respectfully submitted,

ALEXANDER M. SULLIVAN

Chief of Police

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF THE PLAYGROUND COMMISSION

A program that started in 1961 finally commenced on July 4, 1962 with an informal dedication at the new park which stands on the site of the old "Port" school at Merrimacport. This park was designed and erected by Mr. Maurice Carey, chairman of the playground commis- sion.

The playground commission wishes to extend heart- ful thanks and appreciation to the following people. To the family of Winston B. Carroll for their gift of the flag pole which formally stood on their front lawn. This flag pole came from a tree that originally grew near the church in West Newbury Square. It took (Ray Wallace the original owner, of Merrimacport) two years to hand shape it into the present pole. It stands 62 feet from the base to the top of the ball.

To Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Ray Clark and family who presented the first American Flag to be flown over the park in honor and in memory of their sons Harold, Loren & Arthur Ray, Jr. Mr. Carey chairman, accepted the gift in behalf of the playground commission and the Town of Merrimac. Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Clark and family for the gift of geraniums making the base of the pole complete. Mr. Ray Wallace for restoring the flag pole to its present condition. Mr. Ralph Buzzell for loam, Richard Sargent for lumber, Mr. & Mrs. C. Darbe for their picnic tables, Mr. & Mrs. C. Deminie, a picnic table, small trees to be planted in the spring from the Merrimac Grange. And last but not least all the kind people too numerous to mention who offered skill and labor to make this park a reality. A look into the future is the hope of having a large beautiful fireplace in 1963, also more tables and accessories, so that organizations and towns people can enjoy themselves at an outing or some affair.

TOWN OF MERRIMAC

The second week of July saw the opening of another successful year of supervised play, under the direct supervision of Mrs. M. E. Parry, assisted by Linda Frazier, Jim Hume, Jr. and M. Mclaughlin, Jr. Approximately 125 to 130 children shared in the many sporting and skilled events daily including something new, a physical fitness program, which really enthused the children and also their parents. We certainly hope that the year 1963 will also be successful. Our program for 1963 is now in progress and we sincerely hope it can be realized.

Respectfully submitted,
