The pre-primary classes are being taught the cor- rect formation of the capital letters in the alphabet. These children are able to recognize and print their ini- tials.

The Palmer Method of Writing is being taught in grades three through six, as well as in the Special Classes.

In these upper classes I have tried to stress the im- portance of neatness and legibility in all written work.

Penmanship should carry over to all written les- sons, every day. This can be accomplished if the teacher will insist upon neatly written papers in all of the chil- dren's daily work.

I have enjoyed my work with the children and ap- preciate the cooperation of the teachers.

Respectfully submitted,

FRANCES H. KEARNAN.

REPORT OF THE PHYSICAL DIRECTOR

The Milford High School 1941 baseball edition was again represented with a team, the calibre of which, few high school nines matched.

Sparked by the inspirational leadership of their coach Ted Steeves, Captain Frank Gentile and his com- petent players, instilled with that winning spirit, proved a sturdy obstacle for opposing teams to hurdle. The pitching performances of Fred Sprague and Albino Fer- reira; the heavy hitting of "Red" Oates; and the all- around leadership of Captain Gentile featured through- out the season.

Physical exercises were continued in the grade schools. More classrooms were included to receive phys- ical exercise instruction including the boys' and girls' vocational classes. Intra-mural basketball teams for boys and girls in the High School and the Stacy School were formed.

The football team, high in spirit and enthusiasm throughout the year, despite its win and loss record, dis- played surprisingly strong determination and courage. Their inspirational play against top opponents deserves credit, since the high school eleven performed their duty to the best of their abilities and in fair play. Lack of playing experience handicapped the team tremendously. The varsity was mainly composed of sophomores and with two more years of training and experience the group is going to be hard to beat. Captain Pessotti and "Red" Oates played outstanding football.

The Milford High basketballers, under the capable coaching technique of "Fitter" Cahill, enjoyed the dual success of annexing the Bay State League title and further honoring themselves by receiving an invitation to par- ticipate at the Annual Tech Tournament.

"Bucky" Tusoni and "Red" Oates led by their popu- lar Captain "Fricky" Cordon covered themselves with glory all season. Frank Gentile and Frank Bulso also contributed largely to the team's success.

410

The play of the second team, with eighteen wins and one loss, brightens the outlook for Cahill's varsity five next year. "Vinny" Dagnese copped scoring honors for the "seconds".

Respectfully submitted,

CHARLES J. BRUCATO.

Report of the School Physicians

Each pupil was examined individually and 588 of them were found to have defects of a serious nature; that num- ber of notices have been sent to the parents of these pupils with the suggestion that they make further in- vestigation with the aid of their family physician or dentist.

The percentage is a little higher than last year but we hope that most of the defects will be corrected; nearly all of them are remediable.

It is interesting to observe the statistics of the "Whole School" group if not very satisfying. The physical con- dition of the school-children is most important and worthy of intelligent and persistent care if they are to be healthy and happy.

Report of the School Nurses

During the past year the school nurses have given as- sistance to the school physicians during physical exam- inations, weighed and measured all pupils, made home visits, conducted audiometer tests for all grades above the third. Considerable time was spent in making home visits for the purpose of obtaining information for his- tories of pupils who were given special examinations on the Travelling School Clinic.

Assistance was given in Toxoid, Tuberculosis and Vaccination Clinics. The general health of the pupils was closely supervised throughout the year by the school nurses.

The banquet and reception given in honor of Mr. A. O. Caswell on May 14, 1941 in the John C. Lynch Auditorium was the outstanding social affair sponsored by the Milford Teachers' Association in 1941. Mr. Paul Raftery, general chairman, was assisted by Frank C. Berry, Rita K. Fitz-

patirck, Philip A. O'Donnell, Gertrude A. Wallace, Mary T. Gilmore, Mary E. Mullane, Ben C. Lancisi, Martha Molinari, and Lucina C. Roche, special committee chair- men. The success of the evening reflected the hard work of the chairmen and their committees.

A fine picture of Mr. Caswell has been secured and hung in the entrance to the John C. Lynch Auditorium. The members of the Association will always remember the cooperation and friendly advice given them by Mr. Caswell.

The Blue Cross, a group insurance, has again been ably handled by Miss Eva Burns.

REPORT OF THE 4-H CLUB WORK

A most successful year in 4-H club work was completed on May 23, 1941 at the annual exhibit of the 108 4-H club girls and boys, in spite of the fact that there was a definite shortage of funds as well as leaders and there was a change in the directorship. Mrs. Fred Luby was given a reluctant farewell at the first monthly meeting of the 1940-1941 season.

The outstanding events of the year were:

The reappearance of the weekly 4-H club column in the Milford Daily News which keeps the townspeople better informed on local club news. Out of 100 girls, 40 were selected to appear in the sectional dress contest in Uxbridge. Out of these 40 who competed with the largest number of girls in the county, 13 were chosen to appear in Worcester for a second judging. One girl, Anita Speroni, was chosen as one of the eight girls to represent Worcester county at the statewide contest. This honor has come to Milford only once before in the fourteen years that club work has functioned here.

A mother's meeting was held with souvenir programs in the club colors, green and white, and refreshments were served.

Considerable credit is due the faithful local leaders who year after year give unrewarded service to the girls of the town. Four-H club work is a volunteer service that may be undertaken by any willing person. As each year closes, it is the fondest hope of every director throughout the state that more and more leaders will appear and offer their services to the young people of the community.

Respectfully submitted,

MRS. GEORGE G. MOORE, Town Director.
