submitted by Pinchas Ball, Civil Engineer (Worcester Mass) in relation to building a new dawn at Sandra Reservoir and veces. sary work pertaining thereto with the exception that a new stone waste way, located so as to carry the waste water across the Vepton Road by a suitable conduit just north of the ice house, which is to beomitted and the present wasto way at old dam be retained be adopted and the water Commissione is Were instructed to carry out said plans omitting the above exception and are as follows To S.C. Staples Joseph Smith I. H. Burke

1

Water Commissioners for the Town of Westborough.

Gentlemen:

Having examined; at your request, the matter of raising the dam at your present Sandra Pond Reservoir, and having considered the subject in all its hearing. the investigation has resulted in the following conclusions, viz ..

That it is far better to build a new permanent dann across the narrow neck at the upper end of the small lower tasin of the reservoir than to raise the present dass.

The lenght of the present dam when raised three feet will be 175 feet. A new day, raised five feet above present high heat will be only 291 feat, or the lenght of the old days when raised would be over two and a half times the lenght of the new dom. The filling of some portions of the old dany, when widened will exceed that of the new one The quantity of materials to be weed in

Omitted

raising the old dam three feet is much larger than that required to build a new one five feet. The site of the present dam is not so good in all respects to build upon as is the new one.

The work to be done in raising the Upton and Hyde Roads, for a corresponding height of dam, is the same in either case. Therefore it is recommended That a new dam be built in the above new location, raising the present water level five feet instead of three That the Voption and Hyde Roads be raised to a corresponding height

That the present daw be left at its present height only receiving such additions as may be necessary to put it in good condition

That the present wasteway at the old dam be abandoned and filled up and that a new stone, waste way be built located so as to carry the waste water across the Upton Road by a suitable conduit just north of the ice house)

That in raising the Hyde Road the present wasteway be abandoned. Hat a waste-way be built between the upper and lower basins across the neck of land which seperates then as shown on the wrap.

Heat a new gate house be built above the new day that a twenty inch outlet pipe to carried from the new gate trouse and connected with the present outlet pipe and so arranged that water may be drawn from the upper basin directly into the present outlet pipe without being let into the lower basin, or water may be let into the lower tasin from this pipe whenever there is a reason for so doing, and thence to drawn from the lower basin.

345

That a 12-inch drain pipe be laid from the upper reservoir into the lower tasin arranged to the weed independently of the gate house on cuttet pipe. That a it-inch drain pipe be laid under the new waste way at the Upton Road, so low down as to completely drain the lower tasin.

The building of the new dawn has the following substantial reasons in its favor.

First. He total cost will be about the same

for a new dawn raised fivefeet as for the old one raised three.

Second. The increase in stored water will be from 35 to 40 million gallons over the raising of three feet.

Third The increased depth of water over the present shallow portions of the upper tasin will tend to kill out effectually all growing vegeta- tion and largely increase the chances of improving the quality of the stored water during hot weather.
