C. WALTER BURRILL, Sealer of Weights and Measures.
Superintendent of Cemetery
To the Board of Selectmen:
I herewith submit my 22nd report as Superintendent of the Swampscott Cemetery. Interments for the year 1937. have numbered 70. Many new lots have been added during the year, all under per- petual care. Some 200 evergreen trees have been planted this year and 50 Norway maples, beautifying greatly the new addition to the cemetery. All walks were sprayed for weeds; gravel put where need- ed, and all paths and avenues marked with signs. All numbers were set for new lots. Three large trees were cut down by the Moth De- partment and the wood given to needy families.
THOMAS HANDLEY, Superintendent.

REPORT OF FIRE ENGINEERS
1937]
Fire Engineers
To the Board of Selectmen:
The following is the report of the Board of Fire Engineers and the Chief of the Fire Department for the year ending December 31, 1937.
Important Notice
We would ask all persons discovering fires in buildings to ring the nearest box (if within reasonable distance) as it is quicker and more accurate than the telephone. If you think you must use the telephone be sure to ask for Emergency, Breakers 82. Do not simply ask for the Fire Department.

Apparatus
All of our regular equipment is in a very good condition, and we expect it will require only the ordinary running repairs this year. The car used by the Chief is ten years old and should be replaced this year.
Hose
We have in service 400 feet of 3-inch hose, 4200 feet of 21/2-inch hose, 750 feet of 1'1/2-inch hose, and 800 feet of $/4-inch hose, all in good condition. We shall require a small amount of new hose this year to keep our reserve supply up to the proper point.
Buildings
The station at Phillips Beach will require only ordinary repairs this year. The Central Station, New Ocean street, should have some repairs, including three new apparatus doors and changes in sanitary arrangements, for which we have asked an appropriation. Two coats of paint are needed on the building.
Fire Alarm System
There have been 72 alarms sent out over our wires during the past year. We have installed a new 8-circuit switchboard, a whistle blowing machine and an air compressor, which completes our plans for bringing our alarm system up to date. We now have six box cir- cuits instead of three, also two bell circuits, with provision made to add more if required.
Remarks
We appreciate the fact that a great many people like to attend fires, to which we have no objection, but we ask that you give us a clear road so we may get there first. Then when you do arrive, park your car some distance from the fire, not as close as possible, and be sure to leave spaces in front of hydrants clear.
R. S. MAXWELL, FRANK N. BESSOM, ROY F. OLSON, Board of Fire Engineers.
JAMES WARNOCK, Chief of Department.

WATER AND SEWERAGE BOARD
1937]
Water and Sewerage Board
To the Citizens of Swampscott:
We submit herewith our annual report for year ending Decem- ber 1, 1937.
The work of putting in a 12-inch main on the State road to Salem street has been completed, and we now have a complete cir- cuit of the town. The connection on New Ocean street has been en- larged and through this work we have more pressure and a very satisfactory flow of water which can be increased during the summer months, as often as necessary.
We have had to relocate 637 feet of 6-inch pipe in Bradlee ave- nue and 50 feet of 8 inch pipe in Atlantic avenue to avoid the culvert of Hawthorne brook.
All the details of water pipe construction follows and cost of same can be found in the Town Accountant's report.

REPORT OF BOARD OF APPEALS
1937]
Care of Brooks
The Hawthorne brook (the W. P. A. project) is practically com- pleted to Humphrey street as far as under ground work is concerned. This work has taken care of all the street drainage up to Humphrey street and on both sides of the brook to the ocean, thus eliminating all danger of flooded streets and houses in this section.
GEO. D. R. DURKEE, HAROLD G. ENHOLM, CHARLES E. HODGDON, Water and Sewerage Board.
Board of Appeals
To the Board of Selectmen:
The Board of Appeals acted upon four matters during the year of 1937.
On June 2, 1937, the board denied the petition of Mildred P. Faella, 688 Humphrey street, to construct a garage within the set- back area.
On June 9, 1937, the board granted the petition of John and Mary Newbury, 22 Puritan avenue, allowing them to extend the existing front porch to within 19 feet of the street line.
On July 29, 1937, the board granted the petition of Ethel Fish- man at 42 Pine street to erect a dwelling on the existing foundation. This building was formerly occupied by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and owned by the Town of Swampscott.
On September 29, 1937, Donato Videtta, 50 Jessie street, was granted permission to build a sunroom within the set-back area. (Not nearer than 7 feet from the street line.)
CONRAD P. RICHARDSON, Chairman, CHARLES V. EASTERBROOK, RALPH C. CURTIS, Board of Appeals.
LEONARD H. BATES, Clerk.
Dog Officer
To the Board of Selectmen:
During the year 1937 there were received 294 complaints con- cerning dogs, each of which was investigated and remedied. There were 299 dogs turned over to the dog officer, 67 being restored to their owners and 232, proven to be stray dogs, were done away with.
All owners who have neglected to license their dogs, as called for in the pubilc statutes, have been notified and required to take out the necessary licenses. There were 694 licenses granted.
WILLIS E. SHEPHARD,
Dog Officer.
