1956 Annual Report
Voted: That the reading of the records of the last meeting be omitted.
Voted: That the following resolution be adopted:
Whereas, during a driving snowstorm on February 28, 1956 a tragic crash occurred without our town which brought sudden death to thirteen persons, serious injuries to several others and, in varying degrees, lesser injuries to scores of other passengers, and
Whereas, through the prompt and splendid work of our own Police and Fire Departments, as well as of members of the Highway Department, Park Department, Water Department, Auxiliary Police Department and various individuals supple- mented with the immeasurable aid rendered by many of our surrounding communi- ties and by state agencies, as well as by such organizations as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, the death toll was held to a minimum, the seriously injured survivors were transported to hospitals with surprising speed, aid and comfort were brought to many at the scene of the accident, and the subsequent Herculean task of clearing the wreckage was performed in an expeditious manner, now, therefore,
Be it Resolved that we, the elected Town Meeting Members of the Town of Swampscott, in Annual Session assembled on this 27th day of March, 1956 do hereby express our deepest sympathy to the families of the bereaved and our wishes for the full and complete recovery of all those who were injured, and
Be it Further Resolved that we do hereby commend and thank the members of the various Swampscott units and other individuals who rendered heroic services under such trying conditions as to earn the unending admiration of their fellow townspeople, and
Be it Further Resolved that we express our very great appreciation to all the surrounding communities and out of town agencies which rendered every possible assistance in an outstanding display of inter-community cooperation, and
Be it Further Resolved that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the records of this Annual Town Meeting as a permanent record of our feelings of sympathy, admiration and gratitude.
