Art. 59. Voted, That all taxes shall become due and payable on or before the tenth day of October next, and that the Collector be instructed to collect forthwith, ac- cording to law, all taxes remaining unpaid after that date, with interest at the' rate of six per cent. per annum, and that the salary of the Collector be the same as last year, six mills.


Voted, To amend the Jurors' List as prepared by the Selectmen, by striking out the names of Jos. A. Cushing, James E. Donovan, Wm. H. Robinson, Richard R. Bolles and Silas B. Totman, and adding the names of George W. Bass, Geo. H. French, Joe Taylor, John A. Holbrook and Frank McCarthy.


Voted, That the list as now amended, be adopted.

Norfolk, ss. To either of the Constables of the Town of


Weymouth, in said County, Greeting:


In the name of the Commonwealth you are hereby re- quired to notify and warn the inhabitants of Weymouth aforesaid, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at Odd Fellows Opera House, in East Weymouth, on Friday, the twelfth day of April instant, at seven o'clock and forty five minutes in the evening, then and there to act on the following articles, namely :


Article 1. To choose a Moderator.


Art. 2. On petition of Frank H. Torrey and fifty-two others, to see if the' town will vote to erect a new school house in Ward One, adequate to accommodate three hundred and fifty pupils and raise by a loan, or otherwise, and appropriate to that use, a sum sufficient for that pur- pose and take all other action necessary to carry into effect any or all of the foregoing propositions.


Art. 3. On petition of E. E. Merchant and nineteen others, to see if the town will take any action in regard to a renewal of the street lighting system, and will raise and

appropriate, or appropriate, money to carry the same into effect.


Art. 4. On petition of N. R. Ells, to see if the town will vote to raise and appropriate $300 for the working of Law- ton Street.


And you are directed to serve this warrant by posting attested copies thereof in three or more public places in each precinct in said town, seven days at least before the time of said meeting.


Hereof fail not, and make due return of this warrant, with your doings thereon, to the Town Clerk, at or before the time of said meeting.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING.


Pursuant to the foregoing warrant, a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the Town of Weymouth qualified to vote in elections, was held in Odd Fellows Opera House, East Weymouth, on Friday, April 12th, 1901, at 7:45 o'clock P. M., the meeting being called to order and the warrant read by the Town Clerk


The Town Clerk appointed Benj. F. Smith and Joseph A. Cushing as Tellers, to check the names of persons voting for Moderator, and administered the oath to them.


Article 1. Louis A. Cook, Esq., was elected Moderator by ballot, the check list being used in the election.


Art. 2. Voted, That the Town raise by a loan, the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars and appropriate that sum for the erection and furnishing of a school house in Ward One in this town adequate to the accommodation of not less than three hundred and fifty pupils, and that a build- ing committee to consist of nine citizens of the town (none of whom shall be members of the School Committee) to be appointed as hereinafter set forth, shall be charged with the whole duty of contracting for the erection, furnishing and finishing complete for its use such school house, in- cluding the general superintendence of its construction, which Building Committee shall be appointed by the Mod- erator of this meeting, the names of the persons to be certi- fied to by the Town Clerk and a record of them made by him. Payments from the Treasury to the amount of said appropriation shall be made upon the order of the Select- men, approved by the Building Committee.


That, The Town Treasurer be authorized with the ap- proval of the Selectmen to issue ten notes of $2.500 each, payable yearly from May 1, 1911 to May 1, 1920, with in- terest at the rate of three and one-half per cent. per annum payable semi-annually.


That, The Committee serve without pay except for such travelling expenses as may be incurred in visiting out of town buildings for information.

That, In awarding contracts, the Building Committee is directed to favor citizens of the Town, and in the employ- ment of mechanics or skilled labor, so called, residents of Weymouth be given the preference, and that all laborers, so called. in or about the building shall be residents of the Town.


The result of the above vote was: Yes, 453; no, 2.


Previous to taking the above vote the Moderator ap- pointed Francis A. Bicknell and Joseph A. Cushing as tel- lers and administered the oath to then.


Voted, Not to reconsider the above vote.


Voted, That final plans and specifications shall be ap- proved by the School Committee before contracts are made by the Building Committee.


Art. 3. Voted, That we raise and appropriate the sum of fifty-five hundred dollars for electric lighting, and that a committee of five be appointed to make contracts for and supervise the same, and that said committee serve without pay other than their actual expenses while in the. dis- charge of their duty.


The result of the above vote was: Yes. 301 : no. 85.


Voted. That J. Clarence Howe act as Chairman of the Electric Light Committee. and that the other four be appointed by the Moderator, one from each ward. The Moderator appointed the following: N. D. Canterbury, F. II. Torrey, F. H. Mason and Lysander Heald.


Voted, That the Committee have full powers, and that they be instructed. in the wording of the contract, "re- bates shall be made for lights not burning."


In taking the above vote. one hundred voters voted in the affirmative.


Voted, To adjourn.

And the above are hereby certified to the Town Clerk of said Weymouth.

In the name of the Commonwealth you are hereby re- quired to notify and warn the inhabitants of Weymouth aforesaid, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at Music Hall in East Weymouth, on Saturday, the thirteenth day of July, instant, at seven o'clock and forty-five minutes in the evening, then and there to act on the following articles, namely:


Article 1. To choose a Moderator.


Art. 2. To see if the town will ratify the action of the Board of Selectmen, wherein they employed counsel to as- sist in the criminal prosecution of George J. Ries for the embezzlement of the money of the town.


Art. 3. To see if the town will refer to its Board of Selectmen the whole matter connected with the defalcation of the said George J. Ries, with full power and authority to commence suit against such party or parties as they may deem legally liable for the whole or any part of such de- falcation, and with full power and authority to make a set- tlement with such party or parties.

And you are directed to serve this warrant by posting attested copies thereof in three public places in each pre- cinct in said town, seven days at least, before the time of said meeting.

Voted, That a committee of five (none of whom shall be members of the Selectmen or Water Commission- ers), one from each Ward, be appointed by the chair to re- tire to the ante-room and bring in the names of five for your consideration who will have full power and authority to commence suit against such party or parties, as they may deem legally liable for the whole or any part of such defalcation, and with full power and authority to make a settlement with such party or parties. And that this committee report back to the citizens of Weymouth for their approval at an adjourned meeting.


More than one hundred voters voted in the affirmative.


Previous to taking the above vote, the Moderator ap- pointed F. A. Bicknell and E. B. Nevin as tellers and ad- ministered the oath to them.


The Moderator appointed the following on the above committee: George W. Baker, Levi B. Curtis, William H. Wall, Gilman B. Loud, E. B. Nevin.


The committee retired and then brought in several names, but many of the persons nominated declined, and after several nominations were made from the floor, the committee were made up of the following persons, viz .:- W. J. Coleman, Wm. H. Pratt, John B. Whelan, Preston Lewis, and Louis A. Cook.


Art. 2. Voted, To ratify the action of the Board of Selectmen, wherein they employed counsel to assist in the criminal prosecution of George J. Ries for the embezzle- ment of the money of the town.


More than 100 of the voters present voted in the affirma- tive.


Voted, That the Auditors of the Town be instructed and directed to make a thorough audit of the books and ac- counts of the Honorable Board of Water Commis- sioners from the time said board was organized to the pres- ent date, and report to the next special or annual Town Meeting, the result of said audit.

The undersigned, Town Clerk of Weymouth, met the Town Clerk of Braintree, at Braintree, at twelve o'clock at noon, Friday, Nov. 15, 1901, the time and place appointed for the Clerks of the Sixth Norfolk District to meet to ex- amine the returns of votes cast in said district for Represen- tatives to General Court and found that Horace R. Drink- water, of Braintree, and Gordon Willis, of Weymouth, having received the largest number of votes, were duly elected, and so certified according to law.
