OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

The Overseers of the Poor submit herewith their annual report for the year ending December 31, 1901, together with the Auditors appraisal of property at the Almshouse made January 1, 1902.

ALMSHOUSE.

William T. Brown and wife were engaged to continue their services as Superintendent and Matron of the house for the year ending April 1, 1902, at a salary of twelve hundred dollars, they to furnish all the hired help needed for the ordinary running of the establishment, and have filled the duties of the positions with fidelity, and their efficient services have given satisfaction to the board.

The house has at all times been found scrupulously neat and orderly, and the inmates well provided and cared for in sickness and in health.

With a larger average number of inmates than for the preceding year, the cost has not only not increased, but has been materially reduced.

As will be noticed from the detailed statement of receipts, the principal source of revenue from the farm has continued to be from the sale of milk, and the number of cows kept has been increased, the herd now numbering twenty-one.

The number of inmates who have been cared for, for the whole or portions of the year, not including boarders, has been thirty-seven, of whom twenty-four continue at the close of the year.

126

There have been but two deaths at the house, as follows :-

Dennis Murphy, age 61, whose settlement was in Easton, who died January 8, 1901.

· John Clark, age 42, who had no settlement in the state, and who died March 4, 1901.

The sickness of this man, though not long, was quite ex- pensive, but the cost will be recovered from the state, as a credit to the house for the current year.

TRAMPS.

The number of tramps who call for food and lodging has continued steadily to diminish, only three hundred and fifteen having applied during the year.

HOSPITALS.

In the number of inmates of hospitals and asylums whose maintenance is met by the town, but little change is shown in the expenditure of the past, as compared with the preced- ing year, the cost being slightly smaller.

In the report of last year it was stated that one hospital inmate, for whom the town had paid for many years, was acknowledged as a state charge, and that it was expected to recover to the town the money which had been expended on his account. This expectation was fulfilled. A claim was prepared, and presented at the last Legislature by Represen- tative Willis, and by a special act $2,959 was appropriated, which has been received by the Treasurer of the town.

POOR OUT OF HOUSE.

This class of the towns poor has continued to increase both in number and in the cost of maintenance, and we see no liklihood in the immediate future, of any less amount being adequate for the demands made upon this appropria- tion. The same is true of the poor within our town who have no settlement here.

127

TOWN PHYSICIANS.

The following physicians were employed for attendance upon the poor of the town ; - For Ward 1 and the Alms- house, W. A. Drake; for Ward 2, J. C. Fraser ; for Ward 3, F. P. Virgin ; for Ward 4, K. H. Granger; for Ward 5, E. N. Mayberry.
