The present enrolment of the High School is 290, distributed as follows : Seniors 56, Juniors 43, Sophomores 67, Freshmen 124. While this enrolment is not quite so large as last year, the Fresh- man and Senior classes are the largest in the history of the school. The addition of a new teacher at the opening of the fall term has greatly strengthened the work in English and has reduced the average number of pupils per teacher to about 26, which is the average number of pupils per teacher in the high schools through- out the United States.
The school is now represented in 15 colleges and 5 normal schools by 50 graduates distributed as follows : Amherst 1, Bowdoin 1, Brown 1, Boston College 1, Boston University 3, Cornell 1, Dartmouth 3, Harvard 1, Massachusetts Agricultural College 2, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 7, Mt. Holyoke 3, Radcliffe 1, Smith 1, Tufts 2, Wisconsin 1, Wellesley 2, Yale
10
1, Boston Normal 1, Bridgewater Normal 12, Salem Normal 1, Framingham Normal 2, Normal Art 2.
That the school is doing excellent work is shown by the fact that entrance to all the above-named institutions may be obtained by certificate, with the exception of Harvard, Radcliffe and the Institute of Technology, which examine all candidates for ad- mission.
The Penny Savings System as maintained by the Monday Club is still continuing to prosper. The total deposit has increased to $3,800. About $1,300 was received from the sale of stamps, a portion of which was offset by withdrawals. Of the 425 deposi- tors 125 have been added this year. The seven rooms in the Hunt and Lincoln schools have the largest deposit for the year with a total of $197.18. The Athens comes next with a deposit of $167.20, and the Howe stands third with a deposit of $164.01. The money still continues to be collected principally from the children in the lower grades, but we hope that as time goes on the habit of depositing which has been acquired in the lower grades will be continued as the pupils grow older. The following regulations will explain the details of the system :
REGULATIONS.
Deposits of one cent or more will be received every school day by the teacher of each class. The amount will be delivered to the treasurer, who will deposit the same in the Savings Bank.
Deposits must be made by attaching stamps to the deposit card at the school where the stamps are bought.
No sum less than the amount represented by all the stamps at- tached to one card can be withdrawn.
When a pupil has a deposit of three dollars the bank will issue a bank book in his name, and from that time his deposit will draw interest.
Deposits should be withdrawn only in case of necessity - in case of sickness or removal from town. All withdrawals must be made through the treasurer, and at request of the parent or guar- dian of the pupil who withdraws money.
When a depositor graduates or leaves the school he will be given his bank book or the money due him.
" The habit of saving is an essential part of the true practical education."
11
Depositors are requested to keep this card clean, and bring it to school whenever depositing or withdrawing money.
The two great forces which militate against accomplishing the best results in the schools are the constant change in the per- sonnel of the teaching force and the daily absence from school of pupils for various reasons. The first, I presume, we shall have with us as long as the teachers can improve their condition by accepting higher salaries elsewhere, but the second is partly re- mediable. It is my opinion that five per cent. of the children at any time may be out for sickness, but when the per cent. runs higher than that, the fault rests either with us or with the parents. A reference to the reports of the truant officers shows that we have not had more than our share of truants, but we have had a large number of children kept out of school by the parents. In three cases the parents refused to send the children after the truant officer had been repeatedly sent for them. It was neces- sary to take these cases to court. In the first two, the children were placed on probation, in the third the parent was fined. Two well defined cases of truancy were also taken to court and the children were committed to the Training School.
The Palmer Method of Writing which was introduced last year has proved very satisfactory. Many of the pupils in the upper grades have acquired the muscular movement and have developed the speed required by the system. In the lower grades the pupils are being taught position, correct pen holding, and the move- ment exercises from which are developed the letter forms. We do not expect to get such good results in letter formation in the lower grades as with the old system, but we do expect that the pupils in the upper grades, having been taught correctly in the lower grades, will be progressively better penmen in the future. Our poorest writers at the present time are in the High School, where if there is any requirement for speed the pupils simply scribble.
In conclusion I wish to thank the parents, teachers and com- mittee for that co-operation which has made the year's work suc- cessful.
Respectfully submitted,
PARKER T. PEARSON, Supt. of Schools.

CLASS ODE
Words and Music by Helen Florence Richards.
O happy school time, ended now, To thee we bid farewell, The cherished mem'ry of thy joys In mind will fondly dwell. Thy golden chain of friendship formed Will never broken be, , And though o'er land and sea we roam Our thoughts will turn to thee.
The future lies before us, veiled In mystery profound, We have no thoughts of doubt or fear, Our hearts with hope abound.
21
The gates of opportunity Will open to our view, Who daily seek by earnest toil The best in life to do.
Our footsteps now in broader paths To Life's new duties turn. May we aspire to lofty heights And all things lower spurn. In ways of wisdom may we grow And heed that inner voice, Which bids us give of heart and hand To make mankind rejoice.
