Whereas, the report of the Appropria- tion Committee recommends a drastic reduction in the amount of the several salaries of the officials and employees in the several Town Departments, said reductions amounting in the aggregate to the sum of $55,170.30, and,
Whereas, the various groups compris- ing the full complement of permanent salaried officials and employees of the Town of Weymouth have, through the heads of each -department, submitted a proposal to contribute for welfare, charity and relief purposes by assign- ing to the Town Treasurer an amount equal to one tenth of the total of each respective salary for the period com- mencing March 1, 1933 and ending De- cember 31. 1933, said contributions amounting in the aggregate to the sum

of $43,819.54, and
Whereas, there has always existed a relationship of loyalty and devotion between the Town of Weymouth and its officials and employees, now,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Town of Weymouth, in Annual Representative Meeting assembled. commends the spirit of willingness and co-operation thus manifested by its several officials and employees and accepts their offer to contribute one tenth of their sev- eral respective salaries for the period stated and the purpose manifested, in lieu of all other recommendations for salary reductions. (Note: The difference in amounts is $11,360.76)
After three hours debate on the merits of this resolution Mr. J. B. Reed of- fered the following amendment:
All teachers receiving $1100 per year remain at $1100.
Those receiving $1200 to $1500 be re- duced 5 per cent.
Those receiving $1550 to $2300 be re- duced 7 per cent.
Those receiving $2350 to $4000 be re- duced 12 per cent.
After a long discussion on this amend- ment George H. Mckinley moved the previous question. It was so voted. Mr. Francis A. Gunn moved that & roll call be taken on this question. The Moderator declared the motion lost.
More than seven members doubted the vote and a recount was ordered. The Moderator appointed John P. Lovell, J. Edward Mulligan and Francis W .. Rea as tellers and they were sworn to the faithful performance of that duty. On the motion to take a roll call on the amendment of Mr. Reed, the tell- ers reported 21 voting in favor and 145 voting in the negative. The mo- tion was declared lost.
The amendment of Mr. Reed was then put before the meeting and it was de- clared not a vote.
The resolution a.s offered by Mr. Sheehy was put before the meeting and the tellers reported 150 voting in the affirmative and 61 in the negative. The resolution was declared voted.

Mr. J. W. Field moved that a roll call be had on the resolution. The mo- tion was declared not a vote.
Mr. Frederick Humphrey moved that the Moderator be a member of the Committee to draft resolutions upon the death of Mr. Bradford Hawes. So voted.
On motion of Mr. John Heffernan, it was voted to adjourn this meeting, to convene at the Weymouth High School, on Wednesday evening, March 8, 1933, at 7:45 o'clock, in order that the Appropriation Committee might be able to revise their figures to con- form to the vote of the above resolu- tion.

The time to which the annual town meeting adjourned as stated in the warrant having arrived, the meeting was called to order at 7:50 o'clock p. m. by George L. Barnes. Prayer was offered by Rev. Ed- ward P. Murphy, Chaplain of the evening. 217 Town Meeting Mem- bers names were checked at the door by officers stationed there for that purpose.
Article 1 Mr. John W. Heffernan, Secretary of the Appropriation Committee, moved as follows: To provide for the salaries, operation and expenses during the current fiscal year of the several town de- partments and activities, for certain permanent improvements and to meet certain requirements of the law, the several sums hereinafter set forth are hereby appropriated for the several purposes and subject to the conditions hereinafter specified, all such sums tb be raised by tax- ation in the levy of the current year unless some other source of rev- enue is expressed.

Francis A. Gunn moved as follows: It is moved, henceforth, the rules gov- erning the taking of a roll call vote in the Weymouth Town Meetings shall be the same as the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Rule No. 68, which stipulates that the vote will be called by calling the roll whenever required by thirty members. After quite a discussion on this subject Mr. Gunn moved as an amendment: that when 121/2 per cent of the members requested a roll call it be taken. Mr. Prince H. Tirrell moved as an amend- ment: that when 60 members of the members present request a roll call it be taken. Mr. Tirrells amendment was put before the meeting and it was declared not a vote. Mr. Gunn's amendment was put before the meet- ing and it was declared not a vote. Mr. Gunn's original motion was then put before the meeting and it was de- clared not a vote. Mr. Thomas J. Kelly moved as an amendment to the Appropriation Committee's motion that the sum be $50.00. This amend- ment was put before the meeting and it was so voted. Item 13. For the maintenance of the Town Hall and War Memorials at the Civic Cen- ter, including the grounds. (Of this sum $2,500.00 shall be expended under the direction of the Building Commit- tee of the Town Hall and War Me- morial for major repairs, the balance) to be expended under the direction of the Selectmen $10,194.00.

Provided further that the several streets hereafter named shall be ac- cepted by the Town and the condi- tions of the votes under Articles 13 and 15 of the warrant for the present Town Meeting shall be complied with, except in so far as Article 15 relates to Forest street between Randolph and Columbian streets, the work to be per- formed -and the money to be expended shall in each instance be done under the direction and supervision of the aforesaid Committee of Charities and Work in Lieu of Charity,

Mr. Everett E. Callahan moved as an amendment : (1) That the Town raise and appropriate the sum of thirty thousand dollars for relief to persons, unable to work, having a legal settle- ment in Weymouth, said sum to be ex- pended under the direction of the Board of Public Welfare.
(2) That the Town raise and appro- priate the sum of one hundred and forty thousand dollars, no more than twenty thousand dollars of which sum shall be expended for materials and equipment, all of said sums to be ex-

pended for work in lieu of charity, under the supervision of a committee of nine, (one from each precinct), ap- pointed by the moderator, said com- mittee to have full authority to act as they deem fit for the best interests of the town, and, further, that all depart- ments be and are, hereby ordered to procure all labor in excess of their regular winter crews from this com- mittee, provided further, that only per- sons with a legal setlement in Wey- mouth be employed.
