REPORT OF THE VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :

Gentlemen :

For 23 years the Weymouth Visiting Nurse Association has never failed the Community nor the people in it and this year is no exception as the following report which I respectfully submit will testify.

The Board of Directors has held 9 regular and 2 special meetings with an average attendance of 10 members. The President, Mrs. Kenneth Hutchison, has presided at all but 2 meetings.

The membership Drive was held the week of April 19-23, 1937. The Association has 340 members this year. The South Shore Horse Show Association was very kind this year in offering the money from the sale of tickets to the Horse Show to the Association. The day was poor but the Association benefited by the enterprise. The Blanket Club under the direction of Mrs. Gillis gave the Treasury over $300.00. Because of these various money making activities, Mrs. Nash, the Treasurer, reports the Treasury in a fair State.

The Supply Closet, under the direction of Mrs. Ahern has been kept well filled. Mrs. Stiles for another year has served efficiently as head of the Nurse Committee. The Baby Clinic, a project of which we are justly proud, has been particularly well managed by Mrs. Henley. She reports 51 Clinics held during the year with 933 babies attending, 157 of which were new.

The Nurses, Mrs. Katherine Pratt and Miss Maud Wilbur report another busy year. In 1937 there were 932 new patients registered. With these and those carried over from the year before there were 734 medical cases, 406 surgical, and 48 obstetrical. The Nurses made a total of 5,,527 calls during the past year. Once more the Board of Directors wishes to publically praise these Nurses for not only their work in line of duty, but also the many calls not in their strict line of duty, and the great deal of time they are always willing to give. We are indeed proud of their co- operative manner in all undertakings.

The Board also wishes to thank the people of Weymouth for any help and assistance given during this past year. We look forward to another year of pleasant duty among our towns people.

Respectfully submitted,

BEATRICE WARREN BICKNELL Secretary

REPORT OF THE PARK COMMISSIONERS

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :

Gentlemen :

The Park Commissioners subniit the following report for the year ending Dec. 31, 1937. While recreation has always been a matter of deep human interest, it now 'occupies a more fully accepted position in the scheme of human affairs. It is our desire to plan our parks so the greatest number of adults and children may derive benefit. Parks serve, primarily, two functions - one of recreation, the other, decoration.

Most of the construction on the parks has been carried on through the W.P.A. They have worked on Great Hill Park and Stella Tirrell Park. We feel this work could have been done much quicker and more economically under private construction, especially during the winter months. We sin- cerely hope the work on the Stella Tirrell Park will be completed by early summer.

Routine care and maintenance has been given all parks with the lowest possible expenditure.

The greens in all parts of the town have been mowed regularly and gardens and shrubs planted. Water is very much needed in the care of these greens and it is hoped that some arrangement may be made to take care of this.

According to the vote at the Annual Town Meeting we accepted from John W. Seabury a piece of land on the northerly side off Park Ave. con- taining approximately 226,700 square feet now known as the "Bradford Torrey Reservation." This is to be maintained as a bird and wild life sanctuary.

Miss Sarah E. Brassill, Supervisor of School Gardens and Clubs, with the co-operation of the Weymouth Garden Club, has been largely responsible for the work done there. With the 4-H Clubs, girl scouts, and boy scouts, trails have been laid and feeding stations erected. At regular intervals the birds are fed and each club or group has its definite assignment to carry out. This is a splendid project for the children and a great asset to the Town. We hereby acknowledge Mr. Seabury's generous gift to the Town.

The ever increasing popularity of No. Weymouth beach continues. In rearranging the bath house facilities we hope to be able to care for many more patrons the coming season.

One must witness one of our playgrounds in full swing to realize the benefit the children are receiving from supervized play. With seven play- grounds and two bathing beaches open, a large number of children enjoy the equipment and instruction for a six weeks period.

The following playgrounds were open for a period of six weeks begin- ning Tuesday, July 6, and closing Friday, August 13.

REPORT OF THE TOWN ACCOUNTANT

East Weymouth, Mass. January 29, 1938.

To the Board of Selectmen :

Gentlemen :

Herewith is submitted the thirty-sixth annual report of the Accounting Department. Detailed information regarding every financial transaction is available in my office to those who wish more than appears herein.

The accounts of the several town officers have been examined regularly, all cash balances verified at least once a month and the cash and securities of the town always found in order.

The Net Debt has been reduced to $534,000 and Surplus Revenue in- creased to $190.439.82. Tax Titles held by the town now represent the sum of $55,425.49.

On July 1, 1937 the Contributory Retirement System became effective and about 200 employees were enrolled as members. The deduction of 5% from members compensation has been made and the town is obligated to provide the sum of $22,735.00 in the 1938 budget as its liability under the system.

The Public Relief problem became so acute that it was necessary to proceed as provided in Sec. 31, Chap. 44 of the General Laws. The excess expenditure involved by this action is $28,708.26.

It is evident that the sums mentioned above, together with the $25,000 Relief Loan due in 1938 will require a total of $76,443.26 to be raised in the 1938 levy in excess of regular requirements.

I recognize and appreciate the co-operative effort of all who have shared in the activities of the office during the year.

Respectfully yours, EMERSON R. DIZER, Town Accountant.
