The total federal allotment for defense work was as follows:

For pre-employment refresher courses $10,160.11

For unemployed youth enrolled with the National Youth Administration 229.66

$10,389.77

Sheet Metal work is only one of the trades needing new men. Two others of great importance are machine work and welding. A request for welding equipment in the amount of $4,000 of Federal money has been granted and the major part of the machinery is on hand awaiting money to set it up. Another request for machine shop equipment to the amount of $66,000 is pending before the Federal authorities.

Previously, Defense Training courses have been restricted to those over 18, unemployed or on W. P. A., and with mechanical ability. In the future it is planned to open these courses to boys in high school who will be of employable age before the completion of their course.

I wish to extend to the Superintendent of Schools, to the teaching . staff, and to the maintenance department my thanks for the excellent support and co-operation they have given me during the year.
