REPORT OF SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE
Our Committee was authorized at a Special Town Meeting held on June 28, 1948. It consists of two members appointed by the Moderator, two members of the Appropriation Committee, the School Committee, and the Superintendent of Schools. By the action of the Special Town Meet- ing, the Committee was assigned two distinct jobs: (1) the planning and construction of additions to the Abigail Adams School in Weymouth Heights and to the Pratt School near Lovell's Corner; (2) the planning of a Junior High School building to be located in South Weymuth.
ADAMS AND PRATT SCHOOL ADDITIONS
Bids for the construction of these additions were first opened in Novem- ber, 1948. Only one complete bid was received and the amount exceeded the appropriation of $350,000.00. The plans for the Adams addition were altered, new bids were sought, and opened on February 18, 1949. The Annual Meeting in March voted an additional appropriation of $50,000.00 and the Committee awarded the general contract (less painting) in the amount of $326,750.00 to the low bidder, John Hamre & Son of Quincy. Construction of the Adams addition of six rooms was begun late in March and work on the Pratt addition of four rooms started about one month later.
There have been many delays in the delivery of materials and a strike in the steel fabricating plant in Somerville held up progress on the Pratt addition during the summer months. At this writing, the Adams addition is virtually completed and it will be opened on February 27th following the winter vacation. It is hoped that the Pratt addition will be ready for pupil occupancy on the same date.
The additions are of one story, flat roof, modern design with a solid bank of windows along one side. The classrooms are large, well lighted, and painted in light colors. Both additions will be opened for public inspection sometime in March.
SOUTH JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
The Special Town Meeting held on April 25, 1949 appropriated $39,999 .- 00 for the preparation of plans, working drawings, and detailed specifica- tions for the construction of a Junior High School and authorized the Building Committee to secure bids for same. The Committee then met and engaged the Coletti Brothers, of Boston, who had prepared the pre- liminary plans, to complete the plans and specifications. The Committee planned to call for bids for the construction work to be opened on January 30th. The Appropriation Committee, however, felt that this was too late a date for them to give proper consideration to so large an appropriation and recommended that action on the article for the Junior High School appropriation be postponed from the Annual Town Meeting to a Special Town Meeting to be held shortly after the Annual Town Meeting. Our Committee has agreed to this postponement.
Respectfully submitted,
