REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the School Committee of Scituate :
I have the honor to submit my sixth annual report for your consideration.
CHANGES IN OUR TEACHING STAFF
The school year opened last September with but three teacher changes, one in the Senior High, one in the Junior High and one at the Hatherly School. An additional teacher was also added to the staff at the Jenkins School.
At the High School. Ralph N. Hart resigned his position as assistant teacher in the science and history departments and as director of the boys' physical education program and was suc- ceeded by Wendell H. Thornton, a graduate of Colby College, 1930, and for the past year a teacher at the Hanover High School. In the Junior High, Miss Marion L. Brine was elected to fill the position previously held by Alice S. Eastham. Miss Brine is a graduate of the four year course at Bridgewater Nor- mal School, and for the past three years has been a teacher in the Junior High School at Rockport.
At the Hatherly School. Miss Blanche E. Haynes resigned after three years service as teacher of Grade II. Miss Helen Knox, at her own request, was placed in charge of Grade II, and Miss Lucy A. Lockhart, a graduate of the Wheelock Training School, and for the past four years a first grade teacher at Bil- lerica, was selected for Grade 1.
As it was necessary to divide one of the large grades at the Jenkins School this year-an additional teacher had to be provided there. Miss Bessie M. Monahan, a Bridgewater Normal School graduate, 1929, and a substitute toucher at Braintree for approximately one year, was elected to the position, and assigned to Grade IVB.

UPKEEP OF BUILDINGS
During the year 1931 a number of major improvements to our school buildings and grounds were accomplished. At the High School, nearly 1,600 feet of cement curbing was built, ex- tending on both sides of the rear driveway, on the southerly side of the main driveway, and on both sides of the parking-place. The rear driveway was treated to a coating of tarvia to over- come the loose condition of the roadway. At the Household Arts building, in accordance with the need expressed in last year's report, a system of steam heat was installed. This is a great improvement over the old hot air furnaces, and the economy of operation is reflected in reduced fuel costs. The window sashes of this building have been replaced with new ones and the out- side of the building has been painted. Some needed repairs to the bleachers adjoining the athletic field were also made.
At the Hatherly School the new fence, mentioned in last year's report, was erected. This is an all metal Security fence with the posts set 21/2 feet in cement. It adds a great deal to the appearance of the grounds and is an improvement of a per- manent nature. The replacement of window sashes in this build- ing has now been completed and all north and east windows have been equipped with metal weather strips. The walls and ceilings of the hallway have also been painted.
No major repairs were undertaken at the Jenkins School this year, although the basements were whitened during the summer, and electric lights installed in two of the rooms that had not been so equipped.
For the coming year there are no special major repairs being considered, but there should be some interior painting in the elementary buildings, and a number of pupil desk-tops should be resurfaced.
New equipment added during the year included twenty pupil desks and chairs for one of the High School rooms that had previously been equipped with only tablet arm-chairs. The Manual Training department-to meet the need of larger classes -received eight additional vises and a number of miscellaneous

tools. The Household Arts room was equipped with a full length mirror and an electric sewing machine to supplement the three foot-pedal machines now in use.
AMERICANIZATION
The following report from the Director of our classes in Americanization deals with the classification of students, the aims of teaching and the regular class-room procedure in the adult alien classes. I think that this may be of interest to the general public.
Mr. H. C. Wingate,
Superintendent of Schools,
Scituate, Mass.
Dear Mr. Wingate :
The Beginners or grade I students are of two types-illit- erate and literate. The illiterate students are unable to read or write in any language, while the literate group are able to read and write in their native tongue, and they may even be able to speak and write a very little English.
Our aims in teaching a class of Beginners are as follows :
1. To teach the students to talk in simple English about every- day experiences.
2. To teach them to read and understand simple English, the English they need daily and want to know.
3. To teach them to write simple facts of identification and per- sonal history from memory, and to write short sentences from dictation.
4. To make a beginning in the teaching of an understanding and appreciation of the ideals and habits of citizenship.
In regard to our writing method it may be said that because of limited time, our only aim is to teach beginners to write leg- ibly. There are two important steps in the development of writing. The first and very essential step is blackboard work for letter formation. This helps to overcome the awkwardness and tenseness with which the Beginner writes on paper. The second step is to write on paper the formation learned at the board.
The small and capital letters are taught by grouping to-

gether those similar in form, and those necessary to meet the im- mediate needs of the lesson at hand. By experience we have found that presenting the script with the printed form does not confuse the students, and is a time saving device.
