CLASS SONG By JANE E. LANG, 1940 This day we pledge our lives anew In service to mankind, Our standard shows in colors true The aims of steadfast minds.

May fortune shine on this fair class Success that all may know. A kindly share of all that's best And strength that still will grow.

Thus sing we for the victory And all that it assures, Within our hearts comes forth the cry, "HE CONQUERS WHO ENDURES."

Report of Middlesex County Extension Service For the Year 1940

This is a report of work done in Wakefield during 1940 by the Middlesex County Extension Service:

Poultrymen of Wakefield were visited concerning pro- duction and marketing problems. E. H. Larson had his flock tested for pullorum disease by the Massachusetts State College. This flock is found to be free of this disease.

So far, the work of the Extension Service Home Depart- ment in Wakefield has been sponsored by the Greenwood Woman's Club. The Greenwood homemakers have en- joyed the classes in the reupholstery of furniture, clothing construction, and remodelling of clothes. The single

meetings have been: Looking Our Best, Choosing Our Clothes, Table Service, Christmas Greens, and Christmas Gift Suggestions.

1939-40 was a banner year for 4-H Club work in Wake- field. Mrs. George Stoddard, 4-H town chairman, gave generously of her time and effort to strengthen club work in the town, particularly in the Greenwood section, where there had seemed to be less interest during the past few years. Assisting Mrs. Stoddard were the following officers of the committee: Mrs. Alice Courage, press corre- spondent; Leon Blanchard, secretary; and an executive committee composed of Mrs. Emily Climo, Mrs. Anne Hunneman, and William Dill.

There were twenty-one active clubs, with a total en- rollment of one hundred twenty-seven girls and thirty boys. Distribution of projects was as follows: ten clothing clubs; one, knitting; one, crocheting; four, home furnishing (including craft work); three, food; and two boys' clubs in handicraft, also one in gardening. The following persons served as local leaders: Clothing, Mrs. Edmund Becker, Mrs. M. I. Chiochetti, Mrs. Elizabeth Cameron, assisted by Mrs. George Harris, Miss Josephine Cicciarella, Mrs. Eugene Clark, Miss Lucy Evangelista, Miss Evelyn Fuller, Mrs. Walter Jones, Miss Shirley Plummer, and Mrs. George Stoddard; Knitting, Mrs. F. Morton Lee; Crocheting, Miss Theresa Cicciarella; Food, Mrs. John Climo, Miss Bertha Climo, and Mrs. Alice G. Courage; Home Furnishing, with craft work, Mrs. John Climo, Miss Charlotte Hunneman, Mrs. George Mansfield, assisted by Mrs. William Condon, Miss Ethelyn Ramsdell, assisted by Miss Ruth Jolliffe; Canning, Mrs. Anne Hun- neman; Boys' Handicraft, Leon Blanchard, Miss Jeanne Evangelista; Garden, Gaston E. Loubris.

Local leaders in Wakefield have worked rather closely with the parents of their club members and as a result they have had the co-operation of the parents, which insures the success of every club.

A sectional leader-training meeting for clothing club leaders was held in the Lafayette Building, with Mrs. Edmund Becker in charge. Miss Ellen Wareham, county specialist in clothing, instructed the group.

The Christmas meeting of the Friendship Service Club was held at the Fire Station Hall in Greenwood. Wake- field was host to service club members from Burlington, North Reading, Medford, Newton, Concord, Lexington, Winchester, Malden, Stoneham, and Wilmington. Special guest of the evening was George L. Farley, State Club Leader.

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD

A large number of girls entered the clothing contest, modelling aprons, dresses, and house-coats, on County 4-H Girls' Day, held in Concord on May 18. Several of the girls won blue ribbons in the contest.

One of the largest and best exhibits ever held in Wakefield occurred in the High School gymnasium and auditorium on April 25. Unusual pains had been taken by the committee in setting up the exhibit. A pleasing program was given, with nearly all of the local clubs contributing. There was a good attendance of interested parents and friends, before whom club members received . their awards of ribbons and pins.

Leon Blanchard, Frederick Cook, Charlotte Hunneman, and Ethelyn Ramsdell attended Junior Leaders' Camp. Three local leaders, Mrs. Edmund Becker, Mrs. John Climo, and Mrs. Alice G. Courage, attended the local leaders' camp in Amherst on the State College campus during Farm and Home Week.

Mrs. Anne Hunneman deserves much credit for the success of her "Busy Bees" canning club. The girls met in the high school food laboratory each Tuesday morning during the summer. They entered seventy-six jars of products at the Acton Fair, where they took several prizes. Charlotte Hunneman competed in the state can- ning judging contest held in Boston on August 17. Charlotte also displayed some of her jars at the Eastern States Exposition. Last year she was a winner in the Ball jar contest, which honor brought her a free week's trip to the state conservation camp in July.

Club members, local dealers, and club agents of the Extension Service appreciate most sincerely the fact that the town permits the use of the schools and Y. M. C. A. for the meetings of the 4-H young people when properly supervised by adult leaders.

Angelo and Anthony Marino were awarded a medal by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for "Merito- rious Garden Work." Marston Corbett and Joseph Gentile won recognition by the County Office on their fine garden work.

The Trustees of the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library herewith submit the eighty-fifth annual report, for the year 1940.

Though the report for the year 1940 tells of no inno- vations in library service, the Trustees believe that the high standard of service maintained is of even greater importance. The steady day-in and day-out work of any institution is what tells the story of its value.

The usual close associations with the schools have been continued. Among these, probably the growth in the use of the so-called high school collection, in the small room at the left of the entrance of the main library, is the most worthy of notice.

Throughout the year, emphasis on vocational informa- tion has been made in every possible way in an effort to be of service to the young men and women of the town. Displays of books dealing with various vocations have been arranged from time to time and early in the year, work was done by members of the WPA in checking bibliographies and listing material along vocational lines to be added to the pamphlet collection. If even one of Wakefield's young citizens has been thereby helped in the selection of his or her future occupation, the work has been worthwhile.

The public and the trustees are indebted to many friends for gifts of books, flowers, and magazines. As in other years, the beautiful Christmas decorations were given by Mrs. Albert W. Rockwood and Mr. Lucius M. Beebe in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Junius Beebe and Mr. J. Oliver Beebe.

. The Wakefield Society of Arts and Crafts celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in a unique way by giving a pair of brass andirons for the fireplace in the Reference Room.

LIBRARY TRUSTEES

The Wakefield Daily Item has continued its generous gift of space for library news, a service much appreciated by library patrons. To all these thoughtful friends the Trustees extend their sincere thanks.

For a long time it has been evident that there should be some definite plan to make the staff appointments more permanent. As it is now, it is not possible to assure any new appointee of future advancement, which means that just as soon as experience is gained, a new position is sought.

Three times in 1940 this very situation has come up: In June, Miss Barbara Wemmell left to accept a position in the Concord, New Hampshire, Library; in September, Miss Barbara LeNoir left to take a position in the library of a Junior High School in Bangor, Maine, and in Decem- ber, Miss Eva Boyer left to go to West Hartford, Connec- ticut.
