REPORT OF RECREATION COMMISSION
Report of Recreation Commission
Approximately 1600 boys and girls attended the playgrounds daily in Wakefield this past season. The Common, Moulton, and Mapleway areas had the largest daily attendance. Nasella, Hart's Hill, and Montrose, respec- tively, were next in attendance.
Demonstration Day, Athletic Day, Handicraft, and Folk Dancing and Pageantry were specialties returned. Innovations were Educational Movies, Block Dances and Band Concerts, and an adult softball team which won the Metropolitan district title. The above were made possible by our increased budget last year. However, the players of the adult softball team defrayed their own expenses.
As usual, baseball league among the boys created the most constant interest. Three hundred boys made up the Senior and Junior Leagues. Block dances and band concerts at Veterans' Field had an attendance of about 1,000 to 2,000 weekly. From 400 to 500 boys and girls took part in the handicraft classes. Pageantry and folk dancing kept approximately 200 different boys and girls occupied.
We had over 200 adults in the men's softball league. More than 600 boys and girls took part in the Track and Field Championships at Walton Field.
Educational movies for youngsters were held weekly at the Library lecture room, and at the Greenwood Union Church Hall. A typical pro- gram would consist of a couple of one-reel animal pictures, one reel of travel, a singing reel, and a couple of sports pictures. The pictures had to be of such a nature as to interest both our young and old boys and girls. The children looked forward with pleasure to these programs. At the Library the weekly attendance was 300 and at Greenwood 200.
The final event on the closing week was the Demonstration Day at the Common with over 2,000 children and parents present. The four package goods stores of Wakefield-Palumbo's, Tine's, Jeffrey's, and the City Hall Package Goods store-gave free tonic and milk to all our boys and girls of the playgrounds at the Common on Demonstration Day. We publicly thank them for their splendid contribution.
Our policy of having both a man supervisor and a girl supervisor on each of the large playgrounds kept the games going better than ever before and reduced disciplinary problems to a minimum. Our staff consisted of a director, an assistant director, a specialist in handicraft, folk dancing and pageantry, three athletic coaches, and five assistants.
Approximate daily attendance: Common, 400; Moulton, 400; Mapleway, 350; Nasella, 250; Hart's Hill, 150; and Montrose, 50.
The daily attendance at a particular play area at a particular time

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD
might be deceiving as for example: The total attendance at Wakefield Common might be divided over three or four areas-(1) one group of the boys and girls might be practicing in the Lafayette Building for either folk dancing or pageantry, (2) the junior baseball team might be playing a ball game at Greenwood, and the senior team might be playing a game at Moulton, and (3) the group remaining at the Common for Handicraft, Volley Ball, Story Telling, etc.
Acknowledgment is made of indebtedness to the Daily Item for its co- operation in reporting our activities daily to the public and also for the many pictures of playground activities in their paper. The Greenwood Women's Club for serving our youngsters on Demonstration Day and aiding us in our movie programs. The Greenwood Junior Women's Club for the sponsoring of our Block Parties on Veterans' Field. The Greenwood Union Church for the use of the Church Hall, and we can think of no Town department that hasn't co-operated with our work and helped us in every way needed.

REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE
SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORT
The crowded and eventful year of 1945, its earlier months marked by the stress of an ever-accelerated war effort, the months since victory weighted with overwhelming problems of reconversion and readjustment, has presented to all departments of education a challenge in changing human relations. The Wakefield School Committee has endeavored to meet the changing demands of curriculum, of population, and of adult education.
We recount here some important actions of 1945:
Upon vote of Town Meeting, 15% increase for all employees was effec- tive March 26.
Early in the year, the committee received a delegation of West Side citizens which urged a large expenditure for remodeling the 100-year-old West Ward School. The Town Meeting voted favorably on an article inserted by interested citizens to appropriate $15,000 for repairs on, and changes in the West Ward School building. Pursuant to this Town Meet- ing vote, the School Committee applied to the WPB for authorization to carry out the provisions of the vote appropriating $15,000. This petition was not approved.
The room used by the Beebe Memorial Library at the Montrose School was needed for school pupils, and the library was so informed. By mutual agreement, a combined use of the room was arranged pending completion of the Montrose branch library.
