REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The year which this report records has been spent by the School Committee in an earnest effort to keep pace, in policy and in practice, with the unprecedented increase in school population and the town's growth generally. In January, in anticipation of meeting the needs oc- casioned by this growth, the Committee voted to ask the Selectmen to petition the legislature to increase the town's limit of bonded indebted- ness. Mrs. Dutton, Mr. Hickey, Mr. Hancock and Mr. Collins have served as School Committee representatives on the high school and elementary

REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE

school planning committees. The entire School Committee has met with these two planning committees at various joint discussion sessions.

Pursuant to the vote of the 1949 Town Meeting, Dr. Homer Anderson was retained, with a staff, to conduct a school survey of the Town of Wakefield, their findings to be published and distributed to the citizens. The work of the planning committees and the action of the School Com- mittee have been predicated upon the recommendations of this survey, and in August, after careful study of the survey, the School Committee voted to adopt the so-called 6-3-3 plan of organization of the Wakefield schools as soon as adequate housing is provided. The School Committee also voted to recommend that section of the survey entitled, "Most Urgent," and suggested that the planning committees proceed along these lines.

Early in the year the prevailing teacher shortage caused the School Committee to continue from January 1950 through June 1951 the suspen- sion of the rule covering resignation of married women teachers.

An appropriation of $24,195.00 for rehabilitating the Woodville School has resulted in pleasant and healthful housing of the 7th and 8th grades of the Greenwood, Hurd and Warren Schools. At present 214 pupils use this school, at a transportation cost far less than any other method of accommodating the same number of children would require.

The request of the faculty for a so-called twelve months pay system was granted. The School Committee also voted that all non-degree teachers who have had fifteen years' experience in the Town of Wakefield be awarded three credits for length of service in lieu of professional im- provement under the salary schedule. This policy is generally recognized in the State. The request of the teachers for a flat $400.00 increase was refused, but a cost of living increase not to exceed 7% and adjusted on a sliding scale was voted for the calendar year of 1951.

Under a new law, Chapter 417 of the Acts of 1950, the high school cafeteria, heretofore self-supporting, must now turn over its funds to the Town Treasurer.

The Lincoln School was damaged by lightning in an August storm to the extent of $350.00.

On September 26th Francis Dinan, Principal of the Lincoln-Hurd District, was granted military leave beginning October 6th, on his recall to naval duty.
