THE CLASS OF 'SIXTY-TWO

Now that the weeks have numbered many, Now that the years have passed away, We go with memories quite vivid Prepared to meet another day. Far from the halls so full of laughter, Far from the rooms where learning dwells, A class here pledged to keep its honor, Whose life a tale of victory tells. This class which stands in pensive silence Tonight in June of Sixty-two Has kept its faith, and now on leaving Has paths to find and work to do.

1962 REPORT OF THE LIBRARY TRUSTEES

Three important matters have concerned the trustees of the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library during 1962: the provision of new quarters for the Greenwood Branch, the overcrowded conditions in the Youth Depart- ment of the main library, and the implementation of the Library Survey Committee.

The Librarian, Miss D. Marjorie Taylor, Mr. Phillips C. Davis and Mr. Edward Lynch represented the Library Trustees on the Greenwood Fire Station and Library Committee. A building to house dual town services nears completion.

On January 11, 1962 the Board of Library Trustees met with the Library Survey Committee to discuss crowded conditions in the Youth Room and the need for better liaison between the public schools and the public library. The growing school population, the use of non-textbook materials and research assignments have brought High School students to the public libraries throughout the nation. Crowding, discipline prob- lems, mutilation and theft of books and shortage of books and staff have resulted. Adult patrons have curtailed their use of library facilities.

The Library Survey Committee recommended the expansion of the main library building. To this end the Trustees seek appropriations by the town to procure an architectural survey and to acquire land at the rear of the present building.

A Tea, sponsored by the Great Books Groups, on Sunday afternoon, April 8, 1962 opened the observance of National Library Week. An exhibit of rare first editions was loaned by Mr. Paul Seybolt for the occasion and was enjoyed by many citizens throughout the week. Mrs. Frank A. Tre- dinnick wrote a delightful account of the Tea and a discerning review of the exhibit for the press.

During the year, Trustee Edward E. Lynch has been the able President of the Massachusetts Library Trustees' Association, and Trustee Mrs. David Hodgdon has been an active Community Representative for the Great Books Foundation.

PHILLIPS C. DAVIS, Chairman GLADYS WATKINS, Secretary MOSES M. FRANKEL ROSARIA HODGDON EDWARD E. LYNCH THOMAS L. McMANUS DAVID E. SPARKS FRANK A. TREDINNICK, JR. LESLIE J. WILSON

LIBRARIAN'S ANNUAL REPORT -1962

The history of 1962 in the library is largely one of increased use and decreased space. During the year, book circulation increased by more than 2,000 in spite of the fact that the Greenwood branch had to be closed for the last three months of the year, and been able to give only curtailed service throughout the year. Most of the increase was in the children's room and the youth room, where both book stock and space were used to capacity. With the ever increasing demand from the, schools for more

reference work by the students, this problem is likely to be with us until we are able to enlarge our rooms and our reference staff.

In an endeavor to meet the demands for up to date facts we have added new reference books at all levels, but the demand continues to exceed the supply. The hard bound periodical American Heritage has now been subscribed to for student use as well as for the adult collection. Many more adult books have been bought for the youth room in addition to duplicate copies of books in great demand. Better liaison between High School teachers and the library has meant better service to students. The majority of the High School students appreciate the library and the efforts the youth librarian makes to help them; unfortunately a few create a serious discipline problem and take time and attention which could be put to better use. Another disturbing fact is the increased number of reference books which have been stolen from both the adult and youth collections.

Business in the children's room has increased more than in any other section of the library-a sobering thought when we consider this increase will soon reach the already overcrowded youth room. Juvenile book circu- lation rose from 49,600 in 1961 to almost 57,000 in 1962, while attendance at the pre-school story hour averaged between 50 and 75 and at the grade school hour between 75 and 100. During the summer about 200 children came each week for stories, films and library instruction, while kinder- garten and first grade children visited the library with their teachers throughout the year. Mrs. Duggan, children's librarian and Mrs. Bush, youth librarian visited the exceptional children's summer school and talked about libraries and how to use them.

New grade school teachers visited the library on Orientation Day and discussed methods of cooperation between them and the library. As a result of this meeting the method of distributing books to the schools has been changed. Now, teachers choose their own classroom books from our school collection and arrange for transportation. This cuts down on the number of books loaned to the schools, but the teachers get the books they want instead of relying on our selection.
