The above statistical report shows that the routine activi- ties in the schools have been carried out this past year with the assistance of the teachers and local committee members, who have helped so much.

It has been the policy to include the Red Cross Home Nurs- ing Course in the Household Arts Department curriculum every third year. This past winter the course was given to the six Junior and Senior girls of the group.

The new Massachusetts Vision Testing equipment was used to test the vision among the Academy students this Fall. In addition to the acuity tests which we have been giving at school the new equipment offers tests which will pick up students who may be suffering from undue eye strain or lack of muscle balance. It is planned to re-check those whose vision showed any question of being defective, both at the Academy and at the Elementary School.

Figures show that only 36 of the 55 children in the Element- ary School had dental correction last year, leaving 19 with no dental correction! This means that more than a third of the children did not get proper dental care and probably need more attention given to their diet. Seeing that there is something

raw eaten with every meal, whether it be fruit juice, fruit, or cut up carrots, turnip, potato or cabbage, is an easy rule to help in- sure the needed vitamins each day.

The cooperation and help with the Public Health Program by parents, interested citizens, teachers and Town Officials dur- ing the past year has been greatly appreciated.

Respectfully submitted,

Report of the School Physician

Mr. Edwin A. Cox, Superintendent of Schools, New Salem, Massachusetts.

Dear Sir:

At the Academy, the number of defects found in the annual exam'nation was average. Four of these pupils still bite their nails.

In the elementary schools there is, as usual, too large a per- centage who need tonsilectomy, and a surprising number of chil- dren had spine or foot defects.

One situation I feel should be brought to the attention of the School Committee: There are seven children in the grades who have not been successfully vaccinated. It is highly improbable that any person is permanently immune to smallpox, and one un- successful attempt to vaccinate a child should not be sufficient. There ought to be some ruling regarding these cases, perhaps requiring two or three attempts to vaccinate at yearly intervals.

My sympathy to those who have had an extremely hard problem in securing teachers for the last year or two. Better luck in the future.

Respectfully submitted,

KIRKE L. ALEXANDER, M. D.
