In accordance with the vote of the town, at the 1945 annual meeting, the Matthews place at Cooleyville was sold at public auction on February 17th to Miss Laura S. Matthews for $450.00.

The observation post which was located at Carl E. Stow- ell's and where some of our townspeople spent many hours watch- ing for airplanes until this work was done by Radar, was moved to Center Cemetery for use as a toolhouse. The tool house at North New Salem Cemetery, which was said to be privately owned, was also purchased by the town.

The lighting of the Honor Roll could not be done until October due to scarcity of materials necessary for the installa- tion. The sum of $65.00 was raised by popular subscription to pay for the electrical fixtures. As several new names were add- ed during the year, the Honor Roll had to be made over to ac- commodate them. The new slabs which now bear the 32 names (with room for a few more) were made and donated by C. Eugene Coolidge of Orange who still has a keen interest in the town of his ancestors.

Now, after Victory over Germany and Japan we are glad to welcome our boys and girls home from the service of their

8325 tran 32 ered 555 ro

country. Although our town has been represented on the Ger- man and Japan fronts as well as in the Italian campaigns and many other places and several have been wounded and have passed through experiences they would not care to repeat, we have been extremely fortunate, so far, that not one of them has lost his or her life.

Through the proceeds of the sale of salvage, some attractive certificates, conveying the thanks of the town, were secured and are being given to our servicemen and women as they return home. Already fifteen have been issued.

On October 30, 1945, the North New Salem Community Club, at a meeting held at the home of the President, Mrs. Ella Hatstat, voted "That the Community Club give to the Town of New Salem, for the use of the people of New Salem, all of the personal property of the Community Club" and the Selectmen were duly notified of this vote by Mrs. Flora H. Crowl, Secretary and Treasurer Pro Tem. This property consists of tables, dish- es, table ware, kitchen utensils and many chairs, all of which were much needed and gratefully received.

All or most of this property was formerly owned by the Millington Village Improvement Society, Inc., and used in Moore's Hall in that Village, the site of which is now covered by the waters of Quabbin Reservoir.

The New Salem War Price and Rationing Board No. 132.220 office was closed September 30, 1945 and consolidated with the Athol Board. The town has received $133.34 from O. P. A. for heat, light and telephone service furnished while the office was here.

The Bus License of Trailways of New England was renewed during the year.

The State reimbursed the town $1181.58 on snow removal which was 84.3814% of our claim.

Funds for Chapter 81 Highways which have been reduced to $125.00 per mile during the war will be increased to $225.00 per mile in 1946.

33

State and County money for Chapter 90 construction and maintenance will also be available in 1946, if the town so votes. The old Baker snow plow has been exchanged for a new model Baker trip-blade plow and a new hook-up for the Frink V - plow should result in improved performance.

Respectfully submitted,

THOMAS B. MACKIE HARRY W. FAY STANLEY E. PAIGE
