In November and December the town lines were perambulated, as required once in five years by law. On November 4, 1944, all the Selectmen of Athol, Orange and New Salem met at Eagle- ville Reservoir and the Chairmen went out in a row boat to the new Athol-Orange-New Salem bound set February 25, 1943, and marked it.

In June the Selectmen presented the Boston Post cane to Dwight A. Stowell, the oldest man in town.

Report of the Fire Department

During 1944 the Fire Department answered sixteen alarms for fire as follows:

1 Chimney fire

3 Calls from lightning damage

11 Grass and Brush fires

1 Car fire

We wish at this time to publicly thank Mrs. Bertha Daniels and Miss Eva Wagner for cash that they gave the Fire Depart- ment members after their fire, also Mr. George Brown who has given the firemen a sum of money.

DAYLE G. HAMILTON, Chief ALBERT W. COX, Fire Warden

Traffic Officer and Police Report

Regular traffic was light.

Investigated 2 accidents.

Investigated 1 break and entry in daytime where property was stolen. At present the State Police and myself have no definite clues as to the thief.

Stopped and warned 60 drivers for driving faster than the war time regulation.

Special night duty 60 hours.

Traffic duty 75 hours.

I would like to have the Auxiliary Police in force 'til the end of the War. We may need them.

Resolved for 1945: Drive with care and live to drive another year.

ALBERT W. COX, Traffic Officer.

Report of the Public Library

The total circulation of books during 1944 was 2121 of which 983 were taken from the Library at the Center, and 1138 from the Bookmobile.

The Bookmobile has continued its visits throughout the year under a State appropriation and has been so well patronized that we hope the Legislature will again appropriate money for this purpose.

The circulation of magazines was 285 at the Center and 96 at North New Salem. This is a decrease of 87 from last year and is especially noticeable in the number of children's maga- zines taken out.

The same list of magazines as we have had for the past year has been ordered for 1945 but unless they are read it will probab- ly be advisable to drop some of them next year.

During the year there have been 50 books added to the library, 42 by purchase and eight by gift, of which 32 were for adult readers and 18 were juveniles.

In March Mrs. Hazel G. Hamilton, who had been librarian since August, 1941, resigned, and Mrs. Elizabeth P. Cox was ap- pointed Librarian in her place.

Dues on books kept overtime turned over to town treasurer $2.93.
