Oak Street,

This street has been gravelled from Old Mystic street to Wm. Welch's.

Old Mystic Street

from Oak street to Mystic street, near the Winchester line, has been put in a good condition by filling the deep wash- outs and crowning with the material taken from Mystic street in putting in the Electric Road. This work was done by order of the County Commissioners.

Park Avenue

from Florence avenue to Oakland avenue has been im- proved by crowning it with the material taken from Massa- chusetts avenue in putting in the double track from Lowell street to Park avenue. This was well rolled with the steam

roller and later covered over with screened blue gravel. The sidewalk on the east side, for some distance, has been filled, ready for a coat of stone dust. About 500 feet near Appleton street has been coated over with blue gravel.

Prescott Street

has been filled to grade and coated over with screened blue gravel. The sidewalk on the west side has been graded and coated with stone dust.

Vine Street

from Park avenue to Massachusetts avenue has been widened to the line ordered by the County Commissioners and put in a good condition by grading and gravelling. An eighteen- inch drain has been put across near the West End car house with two catch basins. The gutters were paved from the car house to Munroe's road. The sidewalk on the east side has been graded and covered with screened blue gravel.

Warren Street

has been coated over with fine crushed stone, well rolled, and then a coat of screened blue gravel put on. An edge- stone has been set in front of Miss Josephine Robertson's and the estate of James M. Chase. The sidewalk on the east side has been coated over with stone dust.

Wollaston Avenue.

The road-bed has needed no repairs. This shows the ad- vantage of paved gutters. Had the gutters not been paved quite an outlay would have been necessary after every heavy shower, as we have had four showers, causing many wash- outs on other streets. The gutter at the entrance of the street, from Park avenue and along Park avenue to Vine street, has been paved. The grading of the sidewalks has been finished, and the walk on the northeast side has been coated over with stone dust.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS.

Drainage,

Considerable attention has been paid to surface drainage this year, in cleaning old drains and putting in new ones. The drain from Franklin street, along Warren street, across Medford street and the Cemetery driveway to the brook has been taken up and lowered about four feet in order to drain Franklin street and a portion of Broadway. A drain has been laid on Park avenue, from Appleton street to Massachusetts avenue, consisting of a 15-inch pipe from Appleton street to Wollaston avenue, and an 18-inch pipe from Wollaston avenue to Massachusetts avenue, with suit- able connections and catch-basins at Vine street, Wollaston avenue, and Appleton street. A 15-inch drain has been laid on the east side of Pleasant street, from Kensington Park to the drain through G. H. Bartlett's, with branches and catch-basins to catch the surface water from Kensington Park and Glen road.

Crusher,

There was on hand, December 31, about 3,000 tons of stone suitable for crushing. We are buying and piling stone at this time, intending to have 7,000 tons ready for crushing at the opening of the season. I believe it to be economy to have the stone in the yard ready to crush, as it can be bought ten cents per ton cheaper in winter than in summer. The engine and boiler purchased this season are giving good satisfaction, and are furnishing all the power needed at less expense than the old ones.

Tools,

The tools are in a fairly good condition. New ones are purchased to replace those worn out, thus keeping them about the same.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS.

Offal and Ashes,

As last year, the offal and ashes have been under the man- agement of the Highway Department. Through the sum- mer months the offal wagon collected every day, making three collections a week on each route.

Teams,

There are at present fifteen horses, one horse having died this fall, two more should be purchased early in the spring. There are five double carts, four single carts, jigger, four double and two single watering-carts. The single watering- carts are in a poor condition and are hardly worth repairing. The other carts need some slight repairs, and will be painted this spring.

Respectfully submitted. S. E. KIMBALL,

Superintendent of Streets.
