REPORT OF
Commissioners of Cemeteries, Robbins Fund, Soldiers' Monument Fund, and Samuel C. Buckman Fund.
ARLINGTON, Jan. 15, 1909.
The Commissioners of Cemeteries, Robbins Fund, Soldiers' Monument Fund, and Samuel C. Buckman Fund herewith sub- mit their report for the year ending December 31, 1908.
During the year three sections of driveways within the Ceme- tery-Linden, Elm and Maple Avenues-were constructed by putting in a base of screened gravel, covering with Tarvia, and surfacing with gravel. The benefit of this method of construc- tion is evidenced by the absence of mud and the rutting of the driveways during the frost period, freedom from weeds, and the prevention of dust.
The rapid sale of single graves and small lots during the past few years necessitated the grading of additional area to meet future requirements and during the past year a large portion of Plot "Q" has been graded, the loam stored for future use, and the excavated gravel carted to the adjoining park lands.
Water mains have been laid during the year in those portions of the cemetery heretofore without water, so that now all sec- tions of the grounds that are laid out are supplied with water.
The following number of lots and single graves have been sold and interments made during the year :
Number of lots sold 24

To the Town of Arlington :-
The Trustees of the Robbins Library submit their annual re- port. The circulation of books shows a gain of 624, -. 45,128 for 1908 as against 44,504 for 1907, and in the Children's Room 12,729 for 1908 as against 10,918 for 1907, a gain of 1861. The average daily attendance in the Children's Room has risen from 22 to 30, a further increase of eight over the gain of three of the previous year; that of the Reading Room shows a loss of four,-55 against 59 in 1907. The stack room has been increasingly used by students and scholars for reference work, no record being kept of the volumes consulted, but this use of the Library may account for smaller number of books taken home for examination,-29,980 as against 30,753 in 1907, and 3,016 periodicals against 3,627 in 1907.
We have continued to keep the same number of books, 30, at Arlington Heights, as well as a small supply for the Arlington Heights Study Club. During 1908 these were called for by 792 individuals.
We have long felt the need of securing better accommodations for the branch library at the Heights, and hope during the current year to realize this desire.
We have recently changed the electric wiring of the Library, where it could be easily done, adding new apparatus and Tungsten lamps, a great improvement, and necessary to the safety of the building. A further expenditure must soon be incurred to make the work complete.
We are glad to report that the policy of open shelves is an in- creasing success. The stack room has been enriched by a case of birds placed in the northeast corner and loaned by Mr. Warren Freeman. This has attracted much attention and afforded a great deal of pleasure, as well as a Bald Eagle in the Catalogue Room presented by Mr. Bushnell. Among the more notable addi- tions to the Library have been the Catholic and Jewish Encyclo- pedias, and the Biographies of distinguished citizens of Middle- sex County, edited by William R. Cutter. The Library has also

been enriched by gifts of books by Winfield Robbins, the Misses Robbins, Melvin L. Severy, Rev. Geo. W. Cutter, Frank P. Stearns, Miss J. M. Maynard, Arthur J. Willis, Geo. L. Ray- mond, Charles Bradley, the Washington Elm Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution, Cambridge, the Massachusetts So- ciety of the Sons of the American Revolution and others.
Congressman McCall has sent us public documents, and ar- rangements were made for the return of 95 duplicate copies of similar documents which the government was glad to receive.
The Editors of the Advocate have continued to send us a file of that paper.
To show the value and attractiveness of the Children's Room, mention might be made of the efforts of the Assistant, Miss Edith C. Rice, to make the little people feel at home in that part of the Library. This was done by an exhibition of free hand drawing by the pupils of the primary and grammar schools, all the avail- able wall space being used for this purpose, and some of the work being of high merit. Parents who found it difficult to visit the schools could thus easily examine the work of their children. The children were also encouraged to take an interest in current events by writing their names under the pictures of the various candidates for the Presidency, the girls expressing their prefer- ence for the lady they would like to see in the White House. Three hundred and thirty-seven votes were thus cast, the smaller children not included. It was also suggested that the children should write letters to their favorite authors, asking for auto- graphs on cards of uniform size. From 64 such letters 55 re- sponses have been received, many expressing their pleasure at being considered the friend of the boy or girl asking these favors. A collection of mosses from four of our Massachusetts beaches was made last summer and placed on exhibition to teach the chil- dren the difference in color, form and fragility between the mosses of our north and south shores. Care has been taken to increase the taste of the children for non-fiction books such as history, geography, travel and stories of great men. -
The bulletin board has proved very useful in many ways, es- pecially for holidays and birthdays of notable individuals. By these and similar methods the interest of the children in the Library has been greatly increased. The work of the other de- partments has been carried steadily forward. No adequate idea of the reference work done by Miss Baston could be given with- out using much space in furnishing subjects, titles, etc. The Trustees desire equally to commend the work of the Librarian and all her assistants.
Exhibitions of photographs, etc., have been given in addition to those hitherto reported.
