WATER DIVISION.
EXTENSION OF STREET MAINS. In all there have been laid 528 feet of 8-inch and 121I feet of 6-inch pipe, to extend the high and low service systems at a total cost of $2,000.00. Fifty feet of 6-inch main was abandoned in Cottage Avenue. This main was within the area taken for Alewife Brook Parkway.
RENEWAL OF STREET MAINS. In all 1200 feet of 6-inch cast- iron pipe has been laid in Park Street to replace cement-lined pipe. The total cost of this work was $1,075.46. There was available for this purpose $5,977.80, leaving a balance unex- pended of $4,902.34. We recommend that this balance be re- appropriated for the same purpose, as on account of age of this pipe renewal may become necessary at any time.
The detail costs of extensions and renewals are shown in Table VII and a summary of all expenditures is shown in Table VIII.
MAINS. The lengths and sizes of cement-lined and iron pipe in use January 1, 1909, together with the number of hydrants and gates on both the high and low service systems are shown in the following table :

The total of both systems is 36.91 miles of pipe, 384 hydrants and 318 gates. In addition there are 4,448 feet of smaller pipes, 2-inch to 11/4-inch laid in places where hydrants were not needed, and the amount of water required was small.
SERVICES. Seventy-seven new services have been added dur- ing the year. Forty-two on the high service and thirty-five on the low service system. One service has been changed from the low to the high system. There are 1244 services on the low and 834 on the high service system, 64 in use by the Sewer Division for flushing sewers and 27 services for street watering standpipes.
REPAIRS ON SERVICES. Many complaints have been received of insufficient pressure, which upon investigation have been found to be due to pipes filling with rust on the premises of the con- sumer. Thirty-three of these services have been renewed at the expense of the owners.
RE:ERVOIR. The nests of the brown-tail moths have been removed, the underbrush cleared up, the fences repaired and the brook cleaned.
HYDRANTS. The hydrants have been repaired and all have been oiled and painted, and are now in good condition.

During the year 1909 the Town purchased land adjacent to the railroad, formerly owned by the Kelley Heirs, for the use of the departments under the control of this Board.
We recommend that this property be developed as rapidly as money can be spared for the purpose.
246
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS
We also recommend that a substantial appropriation be made the coming year for this purpose.
There is evidence of considerable building the coming year which will cause a demand for the construction of a large amount of sewer and water mains. We believe the time has come when a more liberal policy toward these necessities should be adopted.
Respectfully submitted, WILLIAM N. WINN, H. W. HAYES, RODNEY T. HARDY,
Board of Public Works.
