In 1855 for 79 couples,
In 1856 for 60 couples,
In 1857 for 48 couples, In 1858 for 49 couples.
In 1855 one couple to 84 population, In 1858 one couple to 153 population.
This state of things is the same in many of our cities and towns. Why this decrease in the numbers married ? But one answer can be given ; the customs and habits of society have become extravagant; so much so, that young men, with moderate income dare not venture to support a family. If young people would consent to start as their parents did, instead of begin- ning where they now are, more would enter wedlock.
32
MARRIAGES.
The whole number of Marriages in 1858, was thirty-three, the same as last year.
The discrepancy between the entries of Intentions and the Marriages, in Newton, is mainly owing to the fact that Catholics are married in other towns where there are societies of that order, while their intentions are entered in Newton.
The oldest person married was 65 years.

The oldest person was Jacob Adams, 82 years of age.
The past year (1858,) has been remarkably healthy. The population is probably about 7,500. The number of deaths the past year, has been equal to 1 in 125 of the population. There may have been a few deaths among the foreign population whichi have escaped our vigilance.
But three cases of Fever in our town have terminated fatally the past year, two of Typhoid and one of Scarlet. Last year the number of Deaths by Consumption was 22, just one third of the whole. This year we have had 17 in 60, more than one fourth; and improvement on last year. A large proportion of the cases of Consumption are females, and it becomes them to improve still farther in their dress. An important step has recently been taken in making thick soled shoes "fashionable." If there shall fol- low an improvement in the sleeve, in the position of the bonnet, in warming our houses, and in exercise in the open air, upon the ice, or over the fields, we shall expect to see a less proportion of deaths by Consumption.
