hand this year over last year, say $550, and the Warden's salary for the year 1858, which was paid last year, leaving $1,852 83 as the actual expense of the house for the year. This includes the Warden's salary to the 1st of March. The Board deem it proper to state in this connection, that their views and wishes as Overseers of the Poor, have been faith- fully carried out by the Warden of the house. The manner in which he has discharged his duty during the past year, has been no less gratifying to the Board, than advantageous to the Town.
In submitting these remarks upon the various items of the above estimate, the Board have been actuated by a desire to explain, so far as could be done in a few words, what might seem to need explanation in the expenditures of the several departments during the past year, and to exhibit their actual wants for the ensuing year. This has been done in the firm belief, that when the subject is properly presented, none of the important interests of the Town will be allowed to suffer for the want of an adequate grant of money.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
THOMAS RICE, JR., SAMUEL F. DIX, JOHN B. H. FULLER, JAMES F. C. HYDE, LUTHER R. WATTLES,
Selectmen
of the Town of Newton.

It is believed that Newton is as good a place as any other to settle in, and that the vicinity of Boston is as good a place in which to find lucrative employment as any other ; therefore it is hoped that our children will not be so anxious to become suddenly rich, as to leave substantial good at home, for imaginary at a distance, nor so anxious to outshine their neighbors in equi- page, if married, as to cause them, when otherwise prepared, to neglect that institution altogether. 'I he glowing accounts of the waving fields of prairie wheat, and of the glittering dust of California, have allured and deceived many of our youth who ought to have settled in Newton in years past.

MARRIAGES.
The whole number of marriages in 1859, was 44, eleven more than last year.
The discrepancy between the entries of intentions and the marriages, in Newton, is mainly owing to the fact, that Catholics are married in other towns and cities, where there are societies of that order, while their inten- tions must be entered in Newton records.
The oldest person married was 64 years.

Two unusual facts exist in the above table of deaths. One is, that the same number died between 60 and 90, as did under 30. The other is, that there were so many more males than females. Twenty-two over 60 is a large number of old persons for one year; and twenty-two under 30, is a small number of young persons. The past year has been another remarkably healthy year. Our population is probably about 7800; if so, there has been about one death to 126 of the population ; a remarkably small, comparative, number. There may have been a few deaths, among the foreign population, which has escaped our vigilance.
Although our town is remarkably healthy, death makes inroads into cur village every year ; and it becomes every head of a family, while he pro- vides well for the living, to provide, also, a resting place for the dead, while in health, and when he can prepare it deliberately. It may not be out of place, in this connection, to state that our new Cemetery, located about in the ter- ritorial centre of our town, is a lovely spot, in which to consign the remains of departed friends. It is considered by many to possess advantages, by na- ture, over any other Cemetery in this region. Between 100 and 200 lots have been taken ; 84 have been graded, and about twenty have been fenced. About 100 persons have been buried there. The best of the grounds have been recently laid out, and the coming spring will be a favorable time to select a lot.
