The estimate for Bridges is considerable, in consequence of the necessity of repairing the bridge across Charles River, known as Kenrick Bridge, the present year.
The expenses of the Fire Department have been large the past year, largely exceeding the estimate. The excess was mainly occasioned by the purchase of 600 feet new hose, the price of which deducted from the past year's expenses, will leave about the sum submitted, which is thought to be suffi- cient to defray the ordinary expenses of the department for the ensuing year.
For Schools the estimate is the same as last year, which we think will be ample, there being a small surplus of the appro- priation for the two past years yet unexpended, which, together with the town's proportion of the Commonwealth School Fund, will make up, or nearly so, the increased expen- ses for the ensuing year.
The Almshouse expenses have exceeded the estimate of last year, in consequence of the increased number of paupers and the high price of provisions, - but hoping that this in- crease is but temporary, we have set down the estimate the same as that of the last two years.
The debt of the Town has been reduced considerably the past year, which must be a gratifying fact to every tax payer, and leads us to the conclusion that the sum total of the above estimate, although $5,000 less than last year, will enable the town to meet its current expenses, and pay off still another considerable portion of its debt.
Respectfully submitted,
WM. P. HOUGHTON, 1
ORRIN WHIPPLE, Selectmen of Newton.

There was one case of Twins,-two Males.
Twenty six others were recorded, a part of whom were born in previous years; and a part were born in other towns, the families having removed to Newton previous to January, the month for record- ing ; these last would lose their record unless they are recorded in Newton.
INTENTIONS OF MARRIAGE.
Whole number of couples, 48
Where both parties belonged to Newton, 23
Where but one party belonged to Newton, 25-48
Twelve couples less than in 1856 ; owing probably, in part, to the revulsion in business, and in part to the extravagance of the present time in starting in the married life.
MARRIAGES.
The whole number of Marriages in 1857, was 33, six less than in 1856.
Tho discrepancy between the entries of Intentions and the Mar- riages in Newton, is mainly owing to the fact, that Catholics are married in other towns where there are societies of that order, while their Intentions are entered in Newton.
The oldest person married was 69 years. The youngest 66 15

The oldest person who died last year was Mrs. Sarah Bartlett, aged 90 years and 5 months.
The past year (1857,) has been a healthy year. Allowing the usual increase of 300 in our population, it is now about 7,200 ; and suppos- ing we have all the deaths recorded, there has been one death to 109 of the population. There may have been a few deaths among the foreign population, which have escaped our vigilance.
It has long since been established that Newton is one of the most healthy towns in our Commonwealth ; for the last ten years the deaths have been as about 1 to 97 of the population. The centre of our town is about 8 miles distant from the State House in Boston, far enough westward from the ocean to give us the pure country breeze, and bounded easterly by a range of hills, which intercept a great share of the damp easterly sea-breezes.
It has been very rare, within the last 33 years, for an epidemic or a contagious disease to spread in Newton. The greatest cause of death, by far, has been Consumption.
The past year, 22, or one-third of the whole number of deaths in our town have been caused by Consumption ; and 17 of the 22 were females ! I recommend, to the Ladies especially, of Newton, the perusal of the remarks on this subject in my last Registrar's Report. I am more and more convinced of their truthfulness. Remember, prevention is our only hope ; for it is very difficult to remove the disease when once fastened upon us; therefore, put on shoes with thick soles, even if you wear India-rubbers over them, for it is not enough to keep out the wet, but you wish to keep in the natural warmth. Raise not the temperature of your dwelling too high, unless you are willing to take cold when you go out. Protect your arms especially from our wintry blasts, by tighter sleeves ; give full play to your lungs, and in good weather and good walking, be not afraid of rambling the fields frequently.
MARSHALL S. RICE, Registrar.
