*Dr. Richard D'. Piper, a resident in Woburn in the fifties, died in New- port. Maine. August 4. 1897, aged 81 yrs. 4ms. He was born in Stratham. N. H., and was the son of Samuel and Mary (Folsom) Piper. While in Woburn, he published his work on "The Trees of America." Four parts only were issued, and copies are rare and valuable, Part I, issued in 1855. gives an interesting list of Woburn subscribers. His work was that of a pioneer in urging the planting of American frees and shrubs. It is illustrated with specimens of beautiful and historic trees with descriptive text. Among these is the Boston El: Assabet Oak in Stow; Avery Elm, Stratham, N. II .; Charter Oak. Hartford: Black Oak, New York Central Park; Winchester Pine, on Prince Estate, Winchester, and Black Walnut, Roslyn, L. I. The writer comments somewhat at length on the trees of Nahant, with special reference to Mr. Tudor and his estate.
