YORK COUNTY MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY,

Office at South Berwick, Maine.

. Incorporated by the Legislature of Maine, A. D., 1852. A SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE INSURANCE COMPANY. Amount of Property Insured, $3,000,000,00

Amount of Premium Notes to meet Losses, 200,000,00

This Company continues to insure the most kinds of Real and Personal Property, on the Mutual principle, against loss and damage by fire and lightning. The Charter of said Company expressly provides :- " That all property, whether real or Personal, shall be divided into four separate and distinct Classes ; and each class shall be liable for its owu losses." Not each for the other, as in the old combination Companies.

THE FIRST CLASS, OR FARMER'S COMPANY;

Insures Dwelling Houses, Barns and Out Buildings and their contents, when situated at a distance of not less than four rods from other buildings, for a term not more than six years. The farmers can readily see the advantages of insuring in a Class or Company by themselves, where they are not subjected to the risk of property more hazardous than their own. The assessment on five hundred dollars of property insured in this Class, for a period of 33 years, is only one dollar and thirty-eight cents. Farmers will do well to insure in this Company, as it is much the cheapest Company In Maine.

THE SECOND CLASS, OR VILLAGE COMPANY,

Insures Dwelling Houses, Barns and Out Buildings, and their contents, in Towns and Villages, and in the Country, when situated at a distance of less than four rods from safe descriptions of Property : for a term not exceeding six years. This Class, while in its infancy, met with heavy losses, and assessed its members severely, as is most ever the case with all new Companies. It hus now recovered from that shock, is firmly and permanently established, constantly receiving large ac- cessions to its members, and has added a large amount to its capital. Its aim is onward, and will hereafter be a very cheap Campany.

THE THIRD CLASS, OR MERCHANT'S COMPANY, Insures Stores, Merchandize, Public Houses, Churches, School Houses, Academies, Saddle, Harness and Trunk-makers' Shops, Bridges and other description of property not insurable in other Classes, for a term not exceeding three years. The assessment in this class for the past year has been less than stock rates by some 50 per cent.

This Company has done an active and highly successful business for the past four years. Its business is rapidly in- creasing, and is extending to every town in Maine .- It is emphatically & State Company. Combining all the advantages of town and local Companies, and free icom their seetional and local disadvantages, in combining a sufficient capital to sustain a considerable loss. It Is condur ted with the most rigid economy, adjusts its losses liberally and promptly, and is confidently recommended to the favorable consideration of the Property holders of Maine. It promises indemnity to the in- sured, and ably and liberally sustains that assurance. For terms and information, apply at the Company's Office.

PREFACE.

In presenting the second volume of the MAINE REGISTER AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY to the public, we might content ourselves with simply making our acknowledgments to our patrons and the public ; but the character of the pres- ent number, prepared under our enlarged experience and observation, justifies a few words of introduction.

We have endeavored to make the second number more attractive and valua- ble than its predecessor ; and the present enlarged and well-filled volume demonstrates our success.

The Register contains the most desirable business information that could be furnished in the same space and form,-valuable alike to Merchants and Manu- facturers in every branch of industry throughout the State. Also, a complete record of State and County Officers, for the current year.

Our thanks are due to all who have so kindly aided and sustained us by their cooperation and patronage.
