JACOB CHICKERING,

JACOBCHICKERING BOSTON

300 Washington Street, Boston, Mass.,

Ilas recently invented machines by which he is able to make in the MOST PERFECT MANNER, and with far greater rapidity than they have been heretofore.

He is making a new style Piano-Forte Leg, in the form of a SPIRAL SCROLL, which is much admired by all who have seen it, for its superior style and beauty.

He can now supply orders, Wholesale or Retail, and will guarantee his Instruments to be of the FIRST CLASS, and to give satisfaction, or he will refund the money. Persons wishing Piano- Fortes, and enclosing their orders by mail, can have them forwarded, with full directions how to set them up.

OPINIONS OF MUSICIANS AND THE PRESS.

Prof. H. S. May, the English Pianist :

" I have taken an opportunity and examined the Piano-Fortes manufactured by JACOB CHICKERING, and find them made in the most thorough manner and with great elegance of exterior finish. They also possess a lightness of action and fullness, power and brilliancy of tone, which are always requisite to constitute a First Class Piano-Forte. I take pleasure in recommending them as superior Instru- ments."

Prof. T. H. Howe:

" Having examined the various kinds of Piano-Fortes manufactured by JACOB CHICKERING, of Boston, Mass., and having used them myself, I cheerfully recommend them to persons wishing First Class Instruments.

"THOS. H. HOWE, " Teacher of Music, 85 Bedford Street."

J. M. Mozart, the popular Basso of Boston :

"Having often seen and tried JACOB CHICKERING'S Piano-Fortes, I can freely say that they give the Ear perfeet satisfaction, and in finish, are unsurpassed by any Instruments that I have examined -their action is perfect ; being free from that stiffness which characterizes most of the Pianos now in usc.

"J. M. MOZART."

Mr. CHICKERING was also awarded a beautiful DIPLOMA by the New England Inventors and Mechanics' Mutual Association, for best Pianos, at its Exhibition in 1855.

The Jury on Musical Instruments, Class No. 14, consisted of J. M. Mozart, Edwin Fobes, and Sumner Hill.

The following are some of the Notices of the Boston Journals of that date :-

From the Evening Telegraph.

"JACOB CHICKERING, of this city, has on exhibition two seven-octave Piano-Fortes of excellent tone and finish, which attract much attention from the numerous visitors to the exhibition, The eases are most elaborately carved and ornamented, with spiral scroll legs of a new and beautiful design."

From the Boston Herald.

"JACOB CHICKERING has on exhibition two Instruments, the first that he has ever exhibited in public, and their superior tone, action and workmanship throughout are admired by all who see them. We noticed that the last or highest octave in these Instruments is unusually full and brilliant, and that the action of the keys is very quick and elastic. One of the Instruments has the most beautiful case we ever saw. It has the newly designed double scroll legs, and the entire case, which is made of rosewood, is carved in the richest manner. The two Instruments we have mentioned are worthy of a careful examination.

JAMES E. BUTTS, JR. & CO., SUCCESSORS TO THE

LOWELL WIRE FENCE COMPANY, MANUFACTURERS OF PATENT

WINDOWY NETTING & WIRE FENCING. WOVEN BY MACHINERY.

Which, for cheapness and utility, is superior to any article heretofore used, for enclosing Railroads, Canals, Cattle Fields, Gardens, Cemeteries, Heneries, and for Ornamental Garden Work, Grape and Rose Trellises, &c., &c. No. 38 Water Street, Boston, Mass.

The purpose of this advertisement is to call attention to our WIRE FENCING, represented in part by the within dia- gram, which, for economy, strength, closeness, portability, elegance and durability, may challenge competition with any Fencing in the world.

MER

RILL A SC

Above is a diagram of our fence, with a roll from which it has been unrolled. The posts are of wood, set from eight to twelve feet apart, but they may be of iron or stone, or trees may be used where they are convenient. Rails are en- tirely dispensed with. The fence is raised from four to twelve inches from the ground, and is drawn straight and tight, and kept upon an exact level, (or regular inclination), from end to end. Care is required to put it up substantially and neatly. Staples secure the fence to the post, each lateral (or horizontal) wire being clasped with a staple at every post ; but bolts or serews, with hooked heads, or wire twisted round the posts, answer the same purpose. There are several descriptions of this fencing.

No. 1 is 37 feet high, with meshes, (or open spaces), 3 inches square; 4 lateral wires, (as in the ent above), of No. 10 wire, run through the body of the fence, which is of No. It (or No. 15 (wire. The weight is ten lbs., and the price is $2,00 per lineal rod, (16} feet.)

No. 2is precisely like the first kind, except that there are but two lateral (or straight) wires [in it-one at the top, and another at the bottom of the fence. This is 9 lbs., and $1,75 per rod.

No. 3 is 2} feet high, with meshes 3inches square; it has S lateral No. 10 wires, with the body work of No. 14 wire. It is 72 lbs., and $1,50 per rod.

No. 4 is precisely like the third kind, save that the lateral wire in the middle is omitted. It is 62 lbs., and $1,37g per rod.

These kinds are the best for Cemeteries, Gardens, Door Yards, Heneries, etc.

No. 5 is 16 inches high, with meshes 3 inches square ; there are two lateral (outside) wires of No. 12 wire; the body is No. 15. It is 4} lbs., and 75 cents per rod. It is used for ornamental garden work.

No. 6 is 3; feet high, with meshes 6 inches square; it has four lateral No. 10 wires, and the body work of No. 12 wire. It is 10 1bs., and $1, 25 per rod. This kind makes the best and inost practicable barrier against cattle, around fields, along canals, railroads, etc. Some of the Railroad Companies have already ndopted it. Indeed it is emphatically a RAILROAD FENCE.

No. G extra is of the same dimensions as No. 6, the wires being one number heavier throughout. It is 32 feet high ; the lateral wires are of No. 8, and the body of No. 11 wire. It weighs 12 lbs,, und is $1,50 per rod.

No. 7 is precisely like the sixth kind, except that the two middle latteraf wires are omitted. It is 83 lbs., and $1,00 per rod. It is the cheapest SHEEP FENCE that can be erected, and (like the second kind) it is admirably adapted for trellis work, for grape vines and roses, for gardens, etc.

No. 8 is of the same size wires as Nos. Gand 7. It has three lateral wires running through the fenec, and is $1,12 per rod.

The prices above given are those at which we deliver the fence in rolls at any of the depots in Boston, for cash in all cases. A liberal discount will be made to wholesale dealers. A roll contains about twenty-five rods, but we will man- ufacture to order any quantity, more or less, as may be ordered.

Our fencing is varnished black with asphaltum varnish, before leaving the mill ; the varnish gives it a beautiful ap- appearance, and protects it from the influence of the weather -- from rust. If protected from oxydizing by this varnish, (or by paint, or tar, or japanning, or galvanizing)) the fence WILL NEVER WEAR OUT ; but the varnish will require re- newing once in every four or five years.

This fencing is impassable to all stock; it does not "hold" the wind, and can never be blown down in a gale ; no flood will wash it away, since it offers no resistance to the current; it excludes none of the solar rays, so conducive to vegeta- tion; it does not confine the heat, (like board fences or walls), which is prejudicial to crops ; it does not occupy and ex- haust the soil, like hedges ; it requis s no repair, save an occasional replenishing of the varnish ; and wherever it has been tried, it has given the most unqualified satisfaction. This last fact is attested by many hundred letters now iu the hands of the Treasurer of the Company, written by scientific and practical farmers in all parts of the Union.

Our WINDOW NETTING is of various widths, from 13 to 28 inches ; it is of 15, 16 or 17 wire, and varnished like the fence, and sold at seven to ten cents per square foot, being less than one half the former prices.

FLAT ROOFS.

THE NEW ENGLAND ROOFING CO.

Having largely increased their facilities for Manufacturing, are now prepared to answer any orders for

WARRENS' IMPROVED

FIRE & WATER-PROOF

ROOFING MATERIAL,

It has been used upon Dwelling Houses of the first class, Warehouses, Railroad Depots, Freight and Car Houses, Manufactories, and Bridges, and has been pro- nounced by Architects, Builders and others, who have a knowledge of its mer- its, to be of great durability, and to be possessed of fire and water resisting properties, to an extent beyond that of any Roofing Material

now in use.

TESTIMONIALS.

New England Co .- Gentlemen-The block of buildings recently erected by me in this city, on the avenue leading to the People's Ferry, were covered with your Roofing. During the progress of the great fire, which originated on Battery Wharf, (and which destroyed so much valuable property in that vicinity), they were exposed for a long time to a most intense heat, with no apparent effect ; the building finally took fire in the lower stories.

The interior of the building was completely burnt out before the roof fell. It is my opinion that the fire never passed through the roof, but that it fell finally for want of support.

I was on the roof many times during the progress of the conflagration, and can say from personal knowledge, that its resistance to fire is greater than that of any roofing material that I have ever seen. FRANCIS C. DOANE. Boston, May 1st, 1855.

To whom it may concern-I hereby testify that I have used Warrens' Fire and Water-Proof Compo- sition Roofing for the last four years, both on private and public buildings. The International Hotel at Niagara Falls, having 350 feet frontage, and the entensive Engine House and Machine Shops of the New York Central Rail Road, at Buffalo, are covered with this roofing. I have had no difficulty with it, and have heard no complaints, and I do not hesitate to say, that in my opinion, formed from actual experience with its extensive use, that it is the best material for flat roofs now in use, for its cheapness, durability and susceptibility of being readily made perfectly tight, and its great power to resist fire. Baltimore, Feb. 14, 1854. WM. BROWN, Architect.

Gentlemen-At a low place upon the roof, the water stood about four inches deep after a rain-not one drop of which ever passed through, but remained until evaporated by the sun. When the Com- pany's buildings were destroyed, that roof stood until the timbers were burnt from under it, and when no longer able to support the weight of the pebbles upon it, the whole fell into the lower story. The blaze never passed through that roof. If I had buildings to cover, I should use your Composition Roof, in preference to any other. Yours truly, JOHN WATERHOUSE.
