THE ASSEMBLY. 05
THE ASSEMBLY. Yes, we'll rally round the Flag, bors, rally once again.
Since the comrades receiv- ed the April Call it has been our good fortune to make a trip to the Pacific coast and return. We have ridden in the vicinity of ten thousand miles -- by steam, electricity, cable, horses, and mules; in cars, steamboats, wagons, car- riages, and the saddle ; we have been over mountains, under mountains, and through moun- tains, and over rivers, under rivers and through rivers; we have swam in the Pacific occan, bathed in hot springs, and floated on Salt Lake; we have lunched more than four- teen thousand feet above the level of the sea, and been entertained more than a thou- sand fect below the surface of the earth; we have ridden through miles of orange groves and vineyards, and over miles of desert : we have met old comrades and school- mates, and have made new ac-
quaintances; we have cv- changed war stories with the men who wore the blue and the men who wore the gray: we have marched behind the banner, "Down with tyrant- and bosses" and checred speeches of indignation, and we have attended service is the Mormon Assembly rooms : we have visited gold mines and tin mines; we have swel- tered under a heat of mon than one hundred degrees. and we have enjoyed the fun of snow balling; we have rill- den through piles of rock- hundreds of feet in height and through cuts in solid snow; we have-well, we have had a great trip, and now have something of a realizing sen? of the extent and grandeur of this great and glorious coun- try of ours. We propose to . try and give a description of the scenes visited and the in- cidents of the trip for the in-

terest and benefit of the com- rades and their families and friends, and present the first instalment in this Call under the title "The country for which you fought." We promise the comrades that they will find a goodly quanti- ty of army rations in the sketches.
Gen. Cilley delivered a memorial address at Oakland, Me., last Memorial Day. On his return he met Comrade William M. Herbert at Water- ville, one of the United States mail route agents on the Maine Central railroad. The matter of his "lonely all night ride" was referred to, and con- rade Herbert remarked that the story of Chaplain Fuller was correct and well told, and added very seriously, "As for. being afraid, I attribute the loss of my hair to the ride of that night."
We cordially invite cavalry men who wore gray, and who fought against us on many a field, to send communications to the BUGLE. We are com- posed of that sort of stuff which always likes to hear both sides, and battles and
skirmishes in which our regi- nient bore a part will be the better understood if we learn the story of those whom we drove or who drove u . Soch communications will be dont- ly interesting. So send along your letters, Johnnies. Ve have been soldiers and know- how to give soldierly treat- ment.
The bright poem of Com- rade Bartlett, "The Bugler." will well repay a second ard third perusal. Its ringing echoes will remain in memory for days. At the meeting of the Society of the Army of the Potomac at Scranton, Pa., June 15th and 16th, the Caval- ry Society of the Armies of the United States was the only corps organization that marched under its own flag to the sound of its own music. That music was from the old army bugle carried during the war by Comrade Bartlett of one arm, and was blown by him with all his war time vigor and power.
We had the pleasure of meeting Comrade George E. Jumper at San Francisco, dur- ing our recent trip to the Pa-

cific coast, and of having a nice chat with him. The com- rades, especially those of old Co. G, will be pleased to know that he is well, has a nice family consisting of a wife and two boys, is prospering fairly well, and is looking well, though of course is older than when we were comrades together. We shall have some- thing to say about this visit in the sketch of our trip. We also heard favorable reports of Comrades Evans S. Pillsbury, John Wharff and John S. French.
Special attention is called to the sketch by Maj. Hall en- titled "Fort Darling," in this Call. It gives the two sides of an affair which made but little noise at the time, but which proved to have been of great importance, and the dis- crepancy between the facts in the case and the reports of the Federal officers is so great as to be decidedly amusing. This is probably the first time that the correct account has been published, which makes it valu- able as a matter of history. We are pleased to announce that Maj. Hall is preparing an- other sketch for the October Call.
The proceedings of the Car- alry Society have been printed in almost the identical form in which they have appeared here- tofore. The list of new mem- bers who joined at Buffalo in 1891 and at Scranton in 1892 have not been received and hence do not appear in this is- sue. It isour intention to have them appear with the list of new members who may join next year at Boston.
Comrade Daniel W. Davis has been confirmed as Post- master of Amesbury, Mass.
Dr. John P. Sheahan, of Den- nysville, delivered a memorial address at Raymond, N. H., on last Memorial Day.
A set of the reports of the Adjutant General of Maine, IS61-1865-the most complete reports prepared by any State Adjutant General during the war-may be procured by ad- dressing Edward P. Tobie, Pawtucket, R. 1.
J. P. Cilley, Jr., of Harvard Law school, left for Europe June 25th, on a bicycle trip up the Rhine, across to Vienna and then north to Berlin and

through the Hartz mountain to Holland, covering some forty miles a day for sixty days and having twenty days rest for visiting galleries and places of interest.
Our thanks are due to Comrade Charles E. Jacks for a copy of the Journal of the United States Cavalry As- sociation for March, in which are several articles of interest to old cavalry men. We hope to be able to present portions of some of them in future Calls, and then the thanks of the comrades will be due to Comrade Jacks.
The letter from a comrade of the First Massachusetts Cavalry in the "Echoes" is one of interest to every com- rade of our regiment. Al- though it contradicts our regi- mental history and is against all memories and stories of the fight at Ground Squirrel Church, it is none the less wel- come. We gladly give the letter space, and will be glad to give space to others of a similar nature, for we are all seeking after truth. It is such letters as this, and the discus- sion they bring out, which will
enable the future:historien obtain the facts from which : write a complete and com .: history of the war. The Ber is only too happy to i. benefit in this direction. Vill at the same time it- page made more valuable.
