Conrade Vose tells the following story of his service ofles leaving the First Maine Cavalry : Pudiste! and commissioned as lieutenant, Co. H, Second Maine Cavalry, Der. 18th, 1893, at Augusta, Maine; Jed Portland with fourteen men and horses with Co. I; shipped on board the ship Lancester for New Orleans, La., April, 1864; were forty five days going out; remained in Louisiana until July, 1664; was in the Red Tiver campaign. From Louisioni we embarked for Barrancas, Il. After the fall of Forts Gaines and Morgan in Mobile Bay I was detailed with Capt. Johnson, with fifty men from different companies, and placed on Dauphin Island where Fort Gaines is located, for guard duty. While on the Is'ind 1 was detailed by Gen. Robinson as Adjutant General of the fort and forces on the Island, with headquarters in Fort Gaines. December. 1554. We. the Second Maine Cavalry detatchment, moved from Dauphin Ishard to the rear of Mobile to do showing duty. had several skirmishes while there. In January, 1865, we fell back to Fast Pescole, Mi.s., Jan. Both took transport back to Dauphin Is'anl; remained on the Island till Feb. (th, then went to Barrancas, Fla. A brigade composed of a detail from Secont Maine Cavalry, Florida Cavalry and Sixth Pennsylvanis Cavalry, under conaban 1 of Lieut .- C.l., A. B. Spurling, left Pensacola, Flo .. March, 1865, en a raid through the com try lo Montgomery. Ala. Lieut. M. A. Vese was A. D. G. on Col. Spucling's staff. paymaster, with lots of rebel money. March 28th I was wounded at Muddy Creek Bridge, which was found de- stroyed so we couldn't get our horses across. I was detailed with fourteen of my men to dismount and. cross the bridge the best way we could, and go a proper distance and do guard duty, while the bridge was being repaired. After going a short distance we canse to another strean !--- just beyond it were breastworks thrown up. A shot was fired on our right and my sergeant ex- claimed, "The rebs are flanking us." Thinking we were flanked every man fell back. The rebs behind the works opened fire on us. I and nine of my fourteen were wounded. Col. Spurling came over with two hundred dismounted men and charged the works but the rebs had left. Dr. Martin, our surgeon, probed my wound and took the bullet out, and I went on duty with the guard again. March 29th, joined Gen. Stecle's force; April Ist advanced on Blakely, took one hundred prisoners and one battle flag; April 7th went on a scout dressed in gray, captured one captain, and lieuten- ant, and seven privates; one killed. April Sth made an assault on Fort Blake- ly with Gen. French's colored troops; captured two thousand prisoners; April 16th we entered Montgomery, Ala., and heard the news that Presslent Lincoln had been assasinated; remained in Mont- gomery until October 1865. I was pro- moted to first lieutenant, Co. MI, Second Maine Cavalry May Ist, 1865. Joined the regiment at Barrancas, Fla., October Ist, 1865. October 13th I was detailed


as agent of the Bureau of Refigee., Freedman and Abandoned Lands; No. vember roth was placed in command of the post of Pensacola with Co. M. Was mustered out at Barrancas, Fla., D.com- ber 6th, 1365.
