Shire town. One hundred and two miles from Portland, on the Kennebec river. Terminus of upper route M. C. R. R. Electric Railway to Madison, connecting with M. C. Railroad to Oakland, No. Anson, Solon and Bingham. Stages to Norridgewock, Athens and Canaan. Origin- ally a part of Canaan. Separated Feb. 5, 1823, and incorp. under name of Milburn. Name changed Mar. 25, 1836, to Indian name of Skow- hegan, which signifies, "a place to watch." "Skowhegan Falls" was an ancient name, having been a noted locality for the Indians to " watch " for and catch salmon. Bloomfield on south side of the river annexed Feb. 19, 1861. It is thirty-nine miles from Augusta. Pop- ulation-1850, 1756; 1860, 2266; 1870, 3893; 1880, 3860; 1890, 5068; 1900, 5180.
