Thirteen miles East of Alfred. On Boston & Maine Railroad. Granted by Plymouth Colony to Thomas Lewis and Capt. Richard Bonython, February 12, 1629, who took possession June 28, 1631. First permanent settlement commenced 1623. Passed under the jurisdiction of Massa- chusetts in 1653. Represented in general court, 1659. Incorporated under name of Biddeford, being the fourth town, Nov., 1718. Divided, and the part east of the river incorporated under name of Pepperellboro', in memory of Gen. Pepperell, June, 1762.
