The Greenback party made its first appearance in American pol- itics, with the nomination of Wm. Allen for governor of Ohio, by the Democratic State Convention of 1874, in opposition to Rutherford B. Hayes, upon a platform contain- ing a soft money clause. This party made its first appearance in Maine, with the introduction into the Democratic State Convention of 1875, by Solon Chase of Turner, of a resolution containing this Ohio clause. This resolution was re- fused a passage. Before the next campaign, Solon Chase established a Greenback newspaper, and a party was formed, which nominated Al- mon Gage, of Lewiston, as Gov- ernor, who received 520 votes.

The Democratic and Greenback parties united in supporting "fu- sion " candidates for minor offices. By certification of Governor and Council, the House stood, Rep. 61, Fusion, 78, with 12 vacancies, and the Senate, Rep. 11, Fus. 20. By the appearance of persons holding certificates of election from the Governor and Council who, accord- ing to the opinions of the Supreme Court, dated Jan. 3, Jan, 16, and Jan. 27, 1880, were not elected, by the non-certification by the Gov- ernor and Council of persons who appeared by the returns to be duly elected, according to the above decisions, and by the re- monstrance of the Republican mem- bers in both branches of the Legis- lature, no legal organization was effected until January 12, seven days after the constitutional day of meeting. There being no election of governor by the people, Daniel F. Davis of Corinth, Rep., was elected by the Legislature.
