CROOKSTON. Est pop 10,000. Polk county. A prosperous and enterprising city and the county seat on the Red Lake River 28 miles from its junction with the Red River of the North. It is an important railroad center on the main line of the G N and N P Rys 272 miles w of Duluth 299 miles n w of the Twin Cities in the direct line of travel to Manitoba and British Columbia. It is also the terminal of 3 branch lines of the G N Ry. Has churches of all leading denominations, a sanitorium, 2 hospitals, a public library, a business college, an academy, an active commer- cial club, five banks, ten hotels, a theater, feed, flour and fibre mills, a sash, silo, soft drink, marble and cheese factories, a foundry and machine shop, 4 grain elevators, a tannery, 2 cream- eries, 2 bottling works, electric, gas and heating plants several miles of paved streets and a modern sewer system. A. daily newspaper, the Times, a semi- weekly, the Press, and a weekly, the Times, are published. The city has the Holly system of water supply and for drinking purposes artesian wells. A state experimental farm of 480 acres was located here in 1895. The country tributary is one of the best farming districts in the state and has been lavishly endowed by nature with every advantage. The system of farming has undergone a radical change from that of exclusive wheat raising to system- atic crop rotation, stock raising and dairying, and as a consequence of the latter, creameries and cheese factories have been established in numerous lo- calities with extremely gratifying re- sults. The development of these agri- cultural interests along these per- manently substantial lines for which this region is especially adapted by its wonderful capacity for producing a large variety of nutritious grasses in- cluding clover and timothy is rapidly operating to the advantage of this im- portant commercial center of the Red River Valley. The principal shipments are wheat, potatoes, flour and lumber. Good improved lands can still be ob- tained within reasonable distance at $30 to $100 per acre. Exp and tel W T Nicholson Acting P M.
