Ranks fourteenth among the manu- fahturing centers of the United States, and is accorded second place in the per capita value of the production of its factories.

Minneapolis is one of the most im- portant distributing centers of farm implements in the United States; the third largest fruit and produce distrib- uting center; the most important lin- seed products center. The Northwest's automobile distributor and its largest receiver and forwarder of merchandise.

The reserve city of the Ninth Re- serve Banking District. It has 50 banks with a combined capital and sur- plus of $130,000,000.

Minneapolis is one of the most im- portant shopping centers of the coun- try and the annual sales of its retail merchants greatly exceeds those of many cities of about the same or preater population. On Nicollet Ave- nue, its principal retail street, notable because it is not traversed by a street car line, Minneapolis presents an al- most. unbroken facade of atractive store fronts.

Has 85 modern public school build- ings-including five large modern high school properties. Both manual train- ing, comercial training and agricul- tural instruction are provided in the high schools. Dunwoody Institute has an endowment of $5.000,000 and it spe- cializes in the training of youths for positions of skilled mechanics.

Here is the seat of the University of Minnesota, one of the most richly en- dowed and most efficient institutions of higher education in the United States. The University occupies a campus of 108 acres practically in the center of the city and has a total enrollment in the University proper and in the State Agricultural College of approximately 8,000 students. Several other colleges, commercial training institutions and private and parochial schools give Min- neapolis as complete a system of edu- cation as any city in the country.

Minneapolis recently opened to the public The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, erected with funds contributed by public spirited men and having at its disposal a large fund for additions to .its already . priceless collection - of paintings and sculpture.

The public library system instead of centering all of its energies and funds in a single building, has sent the li- brary to all sections of Minneapolis and today there are six principal branches besides the central library and more than 125 deposit and delivery statins in the city, each being in itself a public library.

The public park system of Minne- apolis embraces practically one-tenth

of the city's area of 53 square miles. Included in it are 5 large natural lakes besides a number of smaller bodies of water. Boating of all kinds, bathing and fishing are enjoyed just outside the business center of the city and the presence of the lakes. around which wend attractive boulevards, has proved an incentive for the erection of hun- dreds of beautiful homes facing these parkways.

It has been said that in Minneapolis a larger percentage of the laboring class owns its homes than in any other city on the continent. A recently pub- lished survey of the largest cities in the country shows the cost of living to be the lowest in Minneapolis. This is due in part to the fact that skilled artisans predominate and to the home- loving and home-making spirit which the attractive environment of the city instills in its working people.

Most of the line-yard lumber com- panies have their headquarters in Min- neapolis.

The past thirty years have brought the development of a great diversity in the manufactures of Minneapolis. Ma- chinery is now an important product and Minneapolis is supplying the world with a large number of other articles from its factories, including textiles, cereals, furniture and specialty arti- cles.

The development of its wholesaling trade has kept pace with the increase of manufacturing in

Minneapolis. Practically every article which goes on the shelves and into the stocks of the merchants of the Northwest can be supplied by Minneapolis jobbing houses and the large modern buildings occu- pied by the concerns engaged in the wholesale trade are among the most valuable and most substantial in this young but important metropolis.

To absorb the largest part of the tremendous grain crop of the North- west which Minneapolis has done for years. being the leading cash wheat market in America, required the devel- opment of a dependable and resource- ful system of finance. This resulted in the establishment of many banks and today the financial instituions of Min- neapolis possess a total of deposits, capital and resources which practically doubles the total of other cities of its class. When the new financial plan of the Government was announced Min- neapolis was named the reserve city of the Ninth District. The Government in fact did more than Minneapolis ex- pected because it included in the dis- trict of which this city is the center, the Northern part of Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan.

Minneapolis has been substantially built and one sight which impresses the traveler arriving by almost any of the railroads entering the city, is the number and vast size of the grain ele- vators which dot the horizon. There are more than fifty of these great struc- tures with a combined capacity of about 52,000,000 bushels or nearly one- half the annual receipts of wheat. They are built of wood, steel, brick. tile or concrete and the complicated machin- ery in most cases is operated by steam power.

The same honest stability is observed

in the buildings down town housing the offices, stores and the wholesaling and manufacturing businesses of the city. The devotion of Minneapolis to things artistic and beautiful, however, is quite cvident in all the city's archi- tecture and the profusion of parks and flowers is immediately noticeable to the traveler as he goes from the rail- road station to his hotel. The praises of "The Hanging Gardens of Minne- apolis" have been sung by lecturers and globe trotters. They consist of boxes of foliage and blossoms which are attached to the window ledges of business buildings and which adorn the ornamental lamp standards lining the downtown streets. They are a fore- taste of the beauties of the park sysetm lying beyond and in recent years this love of flowers has made itself mani- fest even around the more somber manufacturing establishments on trackage.

Two years ago, realizing that in spite of its remarkable achievements during the past twenty years the future prom- ised even greater industrial develop- ment of Minneapolis, leading members of the Minneapolis Civic and Commerce Association, brought about the organ- ization of a quasi business corporation which has established a center for in- dustries comparable to the Bush Ter- minal and other great industrial tracts recently laid out in several of the most important American commercial cen- ters.

It has fashioned a plan for dealing with industrial development which bears promise of effectively solving the problem of how to equip new factories with all necessary facilities. A large district has been secured to which has been applied the modern apartment house theory, supplying to all tenants every essential convenience. Fifteen industries have located on this tract since it was opened a year ago.

The development of the nearby resi- dential district will be carried out on the most approved lines through the co-operation of the committee on hous- ing of the Minneapolis Civic & Com- merce Association which has spent years in the study of the most health- ful, comfortable and sightly methods of laying out residential divisions.

Industries seeking sites in the new district will be protected from the avarice of land speculators. None of the investors in the Industrial Associa- tion expect to receive more than a fair profit upon the money he has sub- scribed. This assures that the cost of sites will not be excessive and the availability of such excellent facilities within that zone will make it impossi- ble for the owners of other trackage sites in the city to place more than a fair valuation upon their properties.
