School Report.
As we review the school year, our minds are carried back to the schools of forty or fifty years ago, and with them we are inclined to draw a comparison. In that comparison what do we find? That the schools then were much larger than now ; where then we found forty to sixty scholars, we now find two or three. We found then large families, where we find none now. We also found in these schools a class of twenty or more schol- ars who were from sixteen to twenty one years of age. Now our scholars want to leave the schools before they are fourteen. Are we, as a School Board, responsible for this state of things? We hope not. Our responsibility, we think, is with the schools of today as we find them, which are on as high a grade as can be expected ; and we think, taking the number of scholars and their ages into consideration, they are equal to the schools of the past. Anyone visiting our schools, as it is the duty of parents to do, will find the teachers as a whole are of good moral character, well qualified and willing to do their part to make our schools the best ; also will find many bright and intelli- gent scholars. We cannot help feeling that our efforts and your money are not spent in vain.
