We have added to the Library during the past year 107 volumes, as follows : Transferred from Town Clerk's of- fice, 16. These include " Hitchcock's Geological Survey of New Hampshire," in three volumes, and 13 Regi- mental Histories. Received from Department of Agricul- ture, one, (year book. ) Received from John W. Haley, of Lowell, Mass, one, (see Miscel.) Purchased 89.
The Library has been fairly well patronized for the past year, particularly at Melvin, where we have estab- lished a Branch, containing, at the present time, 76 volumes.
The majority of the calls are for " Story Books," and while we deem it our duty as public officers to have due regard for the wishes of the people, yet we do not think it advisable to invest very largely in light fiction, until our shelves contain those standard works that are the founda- tions and mainstay of every well-selected library ; neither
32
do we apprehend that any will suffer from lack of good, solid, healthy and entertaining reading, so long as the number of useful and instructive books lying idle on the shelves, is as large as at present.
We are indebted to Rev. John W. Hayley, of Lowell, Mass., for a copy of his very interesting work, entitled "Genealogical Memoranda of the Hayley, Piper, Neal and Ricker Families." This book will be very interesting to many of our townspeople.
We append a list, arranged by subject as in the pre- vious report, of the additions of the past year.
Respectfully submitted,
R. P. YOUNG, SECRETARY.
T. H. BLAISDELL.
