By vote of the last town meeting, the cemetery com- mittee was instructed to consider the question of the enlargement of the village cemetery and to report their recommendations to the coming town meeting. Your com- mittee has devoted considerable thought to the subject with the following result.

There are three methods by which the cemetery can be enlarged. 1. By annexing the north part of Mr. Hay- ward's pasture adjoining the old cemetery on the south. 2. By acquiring the sandy tract and hillside on the east side of the highway (belonging to W. L. Hooper). 3. By adding the level field opposite the new cemetery on the west of the highway, belonging to Dennis Griffin.

1. The part of Mr. Hayward's pasture available for such a purpose is limited in area and is too far distant from the new cemetery to render it desirable.

2. The sandy tract and hillside on the Hooper farm contain an ample area and by the use of good taste and judgment and a considerable expenditure of money could be made very attractive. It could be entered from the upper road opposite the old cemetery and from the lower road near the north point of the new cemetery.

32

3. The level field belonging to Mr. Griffin is of suffi- cient area, and is well located in relation to the present cemetery and convenient of access. It is perhaps too level for perfect drainage and may not have a suitable subsoil for burial purposes. It also has a large tobacco barn on it nearly new. The expense of grading would be small.

Of these three methods of extending the cemetery, the second, although open to some objections, seems likely to produce the best results in the end, provided a competent landscape gardener was employed to lay out the land and grade it, and take advantage of the opportunities of the location. · Inasmuch, however, as there is no pressing need of immediate action, we recommend that the subject be kept open for further consideration.

The usual appropriation of two hundred dollars is recommended.
