REPORT OF WALPOLE CEMETERY COMMITTEE,
FOR THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 1, 1903.
To the Selectmen:
The village cemetery and the cemeteries in Drewsville and on Carpenter's hill have been cared for as usual dur- ing the past year. Beside the general care of the village cemetery, including raking in the spring and fall and once mowing the entire cemetery, special care has been taken of the lots maintained by funds. They have been kept mowed through the season and were thoroughly enriched in the late autumn.
There are now thirteen lots for the care of which the town has funds at interest. Small funds for the care of the Willard Blanchard lot and the Almira L. S. Murray lot have been received during the past year by the town treasurer. It is expected that the fund of $500 left by John Selkirk for the care of his lot will become available during the present year, and also the fund of $500 left by Mrs. Oliver Martin for the care of the Mead, Adams and Martin lots.
Three new lots have been assigned during the year to families residing in town. There were thirty-five burials in the village cemetery in the year 1902. Of these twenty- four persons were residents of Walpole and eleven were brought here from other towns for burial. Two union veterans have been buried in the village cemetery during the past year, namely: Lorenzo S. Shaw of Co. E, 3d Vermont Inf. who died in Boston, March 28, and Lucius S. Howe of Co. A, 3d Vermont Inf. who died Dec. 18.
25
Dennis Griffin, a veteran who served in Co. H, 15th N. H. Vols., died Oct. 28 and was buried in St. Peter's cemetery.
As mentioned last year, there is need of another avenue hlong the hillside to make a suitable approach to a large number of desirable lots and it is hoped to do some work ipon it during the coming year.
The usual appropriation of $200 is recommended.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE TOWN LIBRARY
FOR THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 1, 1903.
To the Selectmen:
The whole number of volumes now on the catalogue is 7,907, of which 259 have been added during the past year. Of these 111 have been purchased with the annual appro- priation and 148 have been presented by various donors, a list of whom is added to this report.
The gift by Chandler Robbins, Esq., of New York, of 28 volumes of new and valuable books calls for a thank- ful acknowledgment. We are also indebted to Charles P. Howland, Esq., of New York, for the gift of 20 volumes of useful books and to Mr. Charles B. Bedlington for a choice edition of the works of Robert Burns in 6 volumes. The thanks of the town are due to all those friends who have so kindly remembered the library during the past year. The collection of books printed in Walpole a hundred years ago is still increasing, three volumes having been added during the past year.
By the settlement of the estate of the late Mrs. Frances A. Carpenter, the town has received a legacy of five hun- dred dollars, the income of which is to be used in the pur- chase of books for the library. The fund has been deposited by the town treasurer in the savings bank of Walpole and the interest accumulating during the coming year will be available for the purchase of books. A special label will be pasted in each book thus purchased. This is the first bequest thus far received by the town for the benefit of the library.
28
The reading room has been freely used during the past year and the usual assortment of periodicals has been pur- chased by private subscription or presented by various donors. We are indebted to Mrs. Lucy Schultz for Har- per's Weekly and the Bookbuyer, to Henry G. Wheelock of New York for the Century, Longman's and the Strand, and to Hon. J. G. Bellows for the Outlook. The following have been purchased with the subscription fund: Harper's, At- lantic, Scribner's, Cosmopolitan, Outing, New England, Review of Reviews, McClure's, St. Nicholas, Critic, Granite . Monthly, Life, Judge and Puck.
Henry G. Wheelock of New York has kindly presented two choice steel engravings, "Shakespeare and his Contem- poraries" and "Sir Walter Scott and his literary friends at Abbotsford." The engravings have been handsomely framed and hung in the library. They are valuable works of art and very appropriate ornaments for such an institu- tion as our library.
The branches of the library at Drewsville and North Walpole have been maintained as in former years. Henry E. Putnam cares for the branch in Drewsville and Miss Mary E. Powers is librarian at North Walpole. A hand- some room was reserved for the library in building the Memorial hall in North Walpole, and immediately before the dedication of the hall last spring this room was suit- ably furnished by the library committee with the appro- priation made by the town for the purpose. A large num- ber of volumes have been selected from the library and placed in this room for the permanent use of the readers in that part of the town.
The number of persons using the main library and reading room in 1902, was 7,974.
The number of volumes taken out in 1902 was 8,192, divided as follows:
Main library, 7,536
Branch at North Walpole,
456
Branch at Drewsville,
200
8,192

The committee recommended the usual appropriation of $400 for the coming year.
