GENERAL WHIPPLE'S BRIGADE, RHODE ISLAND, 1778.


[In addition to the foregoing, a brigade of troops was sent to Rhode Island in August to operate in connection with a French fleet which was sent to assist in driving the enemy from that state. The brigade was commanded by Gen. William Whipple, formerly member of the continental congress, and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.


The general's staff was as follows :


William Whipple, Brigadier General. Nathaniel Peabody, Adjutant General. John Samuel Sherburne, Brigade Major. Nathaniel Garfield, Brigade Quartermaster.


Major Sherburne lost one leg August 29, 1778. Following are the rolls of the several regiments .- ED.]
